Overview
The Fleet Trailer & Yard Tractor Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and performing preventative maintenance on the company's fleet of trailers and yard tractors (yard spotters). This position ensures all equipment is maintained in a safe, reliable, and DOT-compliant condition to support daily operations. The ideal candidate is a skilled technician, effective communicator, and team player who can work independently while contributing positively to the maintenance and operations team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform preventative maintenance inspections and repairs flat trailers, van trailers and motor trailers.
- Diagnose and repair trailer brake systems, suspension systems, wheel ends, lighting, electrical components, ABS systems, and air systems.
- Perform welding, fabrication, and structural repairs as needed.
- Inspect and repair trailer doors, floors, roofs, landing gear, and trailer bodies.
- Service, diagnose, and repair yard tractors, including engine, transmission, hydraulic, electrical, air brake, steering, and electrical systems.
- Conduct DOT inspections and ensure equipment compliance with federal, state, and company safety standards.
- Complete work orders, maintenance records, inspection reports, and other required documentation accurately and timely.
- Communicate equipment issues, repair recommendations, and maintenance needs to management.
- Assist with inventory control, parts management, and shop organization.
- Operate commercial vehicles, service trucks, forklifts, and shop equipment safely.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
- Work cooperatively with drivers, operations personnel, vendors, and management to ensure equipment availability and reliability.
- Assist with shuttling trailers between the main facility and warehouse location as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Minimum of three (3) years of trailer, heavy-duty truck, or related fleet maintenance experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of trailer air brake systems, electrical systems, suspension systems, wheel ends, and DOT requirements.
- Experience servicing yard tractors, semi-tractors, and trailers.
- Ability to diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic issues.
- Welding and fabrication experience preferred.
- Strong troubleshooting, diagnostic, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to prioritize work and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.

Required Licenses and Certifications
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL-A) required.
- Current DOT Medical Examiner's Certificate (Medical Card) required.
- Acceptable driving record.
Tools and Equipment
- Must provide and maintain personal mechanic tools necessary to perform assigned job duties.
- Employer will provide specialty tools, shop equipment, and required safety equipment.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry up to 75 pounds.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, and work in variety of areas.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to safely operate commercial vehicles and maintenance equipment.
Work Environment
This position works in both shop and yard environments and may be exposed to moving equipment, loud noises, grease, dirt, fumes, and changing weather conditions. Proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required at all times.

Pay: $30.00 - $40.00 per hour
