Apprentice (or current) PA Water Treatment Operator
The Washington Township Municipal Authority seeks a dependable Apprentice (or currently PA certified) Water Operator. Requires basic mechanical, math and plumbing skills, as well as some construction or maintenance related experience. This is a union position. Apprentice pay rate is $22.16 per hour and Licensed Operators pay rate is $25.04 per hour. Excellent benefits package. Work schedule is 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday-Friday, with weekend on call approximately once a month.
CDL License preferred but not required.

Job Description – Apprentice Water Operator
Responsible to: Director of Utilities
Definition of Job:
Responsible for daily operations and maintenance of the Washington Township Municipal Authority Water Department and system.
Responsibilities may include:
- Operation of Water System to ensure the system, multiple water sources and treatment plant equipment is operating properly
- Clean and grease plant equipment, read and interpret meters and gauges
- Monitor, repair and maintain water system sources; remove debris; disassemble and clean pumps; perform minor repairs when necessary
- Collect samples and perform various lab tests
- Monitoring and analyzing issues in the water system, reporting and making recommendations to the Superintendent and/or Chief Operator of recommended repairs and/or replacements
- Observing the installation of any additions, changes or upgrades to the water system, including but not limited to, red lining of field drawings, and inspection as needed and/or directed
- Participation in the WTMA Leak Detection program, including flushing, valve inspection and making necessary repairs
- Making any and all routine repairs necessary in the water system
- Perform general plant maintenance work such as sweeping, cleaning, sanding and painting of equipment and facilities; perform general grounds maintenance
- Working with the Washington Township Public Works Department to complete any appropriate repairs and/or installations for the water system
- Periodic ‘On-call’ rotation; respond to emergency calls as needed.
- All other tasks and projects as assigned by the Water Superintendent and/or Chief Operator
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Experience in water treatment operations.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills as well as the ability to communicate effectively.
- Knowledge of computer operations, including MS Office, and any other appropriate computer systems (e.g. SCADA).
- Ability to handle multiple tasks and projects, simultaneously
- Ability to complete projects with limited supervision.
- Understanding of water distribution systems operations and repairs.
- Knowledge of water distribution system design and construction requirements.
- Ability to learn and apply the laws, rules, requirements, and procedures applicable to Authority business.
- Valid Driver’s license.
- Operate trucks and other motorized equipment of various sizes and complexity
- Ability to read, interpret and adjust meters and gauges to ensure plant equipment and operations are working properly. Also operate chemical feed devices, take samples, perform chemical and biological analysis and make the appropriate adjustments.
- Ability to diagnose problems, and make repairs to water lines, valves, pumps, and other equipment
- Ability to obtain the appropriate PA DEP Water Operators licenses Class B, E license with Sub-Classes 2,7,8 & 11
- Observe and enforce safety precautions
- Physically able to enter confined spaces, navigate construction sites, lift 50 lbs. and work under environmentally harsh conditions.
Physical Demands and Working Environment
Environment: Work is performed in an indoor plant and an outdoor field environment; travel from site to site; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, noxious odors, gases, mechanical and electrical hazards, and all types of temperature and weather conditions; work in or around water, exposure to hazardous traffic conditions; work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces and rough terrain; work at heights.
Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a field environment; to walk, stand and sit for prolonged periods of time, to frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach, twist, grasp and make repetitive hand movements in the performance of daily duties; climb ladders and stairs; to lift, carry, push and/or pull moderate to heavy amounts of weight.
