The Material Handler performs a variety of physical tasks to transport, store, stage, and distribute materials and merchandise throughout the warehouse and commissary. This position supports daily store operations by safely moving products, maintaining organized storage areas, and ensuring merchandise is available and accessible for stocking and customer service needs.
In addition to material handling duties, the employee will provide forklift support as needed, including operating a forklift to load, unload, transport, and stage pallets and merchandise when the primary forklift operator is unavailable or operational demands require additional assistance. The employee must follow all forklift safety procedures and maintain compliance with Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) standards, safety requirements, and contract expectations.
Work is performed in a fast-paced warehouse environment and requires the ability to lift, carry, push, pull, and move materials while maintaining a safe and efficient workplace.
Location: Imperial Beach Commissary
Schedule: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday.
Days Off: Wednesday and Sunday.
Start Time: 6:00PM (Hours vary based on daily production needs. Candidates must be flexible with their end time.)
Essential Functions:

Manually loads and unloads freight, trucks, pallets, and other transportation devices in a safe and efficient manner.

Unpacks merchandise and places items in the correct shelving, storage, or staging locations.

Transports goods throughout the facility using approved methods such as hand-carrying, hand trucks, or carts.

Operates a forklift to load, unload, transport, stack, and stage pallets, merchandise, and materials throughout the warehouse and commissary in a safe and efficient manner.

Assists with receiving and storing incoming shipments by moving products to designated storage and staging areas using forklift equipment.

Performs routine equipment inspections and reports any forklift maintenance, safety, or operational issues to management.

Maintains clear aisles, organized storage areas, and proper pallet placement in accordance with safety guidelines and DeCA requirements.

Provides forklift coverage when the primary forklift operator is unavailable and supports warehouse operations during peak workload periods.

Follows all forklift operating procedures, safety regulations, and company policies to prevent accidents and damage to products, equipment, and facilities.

Performs other related duties as assigned to support commissary operations.
Minimum Education (or substitute experience) required: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Minimum Experienced Required: Previous warehouse, material handling, or stockroom experience is preferred. Experience operating forklifts in a warehouse, distribution, or commissary environment is preferred. Candidates must be able to safely operate forklift equipment and follow all applicable safety procedures. Possession of a valid forklift certification is preferred and may be required based on contract or site requirements.
Skills Required: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos in English. Ability to write simple correspondence in English. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Equipment Used: Equipment used in this position may include, but is not limited to, forklifts, hand trucks, pallet jacks, carts, pallets, balers, and other material-handling tools, machinery, or devices as required by operational needs. Employees may be required to safely operate powered industrial trucks, including forklifts, to load, unload, transport, stack, and stage materials and merchandise throughout the facility.
Essential Physical Tasks: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Responsible for preparing and arranging materials and products in bulk and non-bulk forms for distribution or storage; moving and loading or unloading equipment, materials and products and related material-handling machinery and equipment; using hand trucks and pallet-jacks to load and move materials. Frequent lifting and/ or moving of objects weighting up to 50 pounds.
