The Village of Winnebago Police Department is seeking qualified candidates to fill an immediate vacancy and establish an eligibility list for future hiring needs.
The Winnebago Police Department provides 24/7 law enforcement services to the residents and visitors of the Village of Winnebago, Illinois. Located just west of Rockford, Winnebago offers small-town charm, strong community relationships, and a supportive working environment.
Our department is committed to providing professional, community-oriented police services through proactive policing, problem-solving, and positive community engagement. Officers are equipped with modern equipment, ongoing training, and the support necessary to effectively serve our community.
Newly appointed officers will be assigned to the night shift upon successful completion of the Field Training Program.
Salary and Benefits

Lateral Transfer Requirements
Candidates seeking lateral appointment must meet the following qualifications at the time of application:
- Successful completion of the Illinois Basic Law Enforcement Academy and certification through the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board (ILETSB), or eligibility to complete the Illinois Out-of-State Reciprocity process, including:
- Mandatory Firearms Training
- Illinois Law for Police Equivalency Examination
- Currently employed, or previously employed within the last three (3) years, as a sworn certified law enforcement officer
- Municipal law enforcement experience preferred but not required
- Must be in good standing with their current or former law enforcement agency
Applicants who do not meet these requirements will not be considered for lateral appointment.
Minimum Qualifications for All Applicants
- United States citizen or lawful permanent resident
- At least 21 years of age
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Possess substantially equivalent skills and abilities required of a police officer
- Valid Illinois driver's license
- Ability to obtain and maintain a valid FOID card
- No felony convictions or disqualifying misdemeanor convictions
- Good moral character and demonstrated integrity

Selection Process
Applicants selected to continue in the hiring process will be invited to participate in an oral interview with the Village Administrator, Chief of Police, and Lieutenant.
Candidates who successfully advance through the interview process may be required to complete:

- Psychological Examination
