Overview
The Diesel Mechanic Apprentice assists experienced mechanics in maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing the company's fleet vehicles and heavy construction equipment. This hands-on position provides on-the-job training while developing the skills needed for a successful career as a diesel mechanic.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
· Perform routine preventive maintenance on company fleet vehicles and construction equipment.
· Assist with diagnosing and repairing hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, mechanical, computerized, and air conditioning systems.
· Help maintain and repair heavy equipment including loaders, rollers, brooms, forklifts, and other construction equipment.
· Complete maintenance and repair work in accordance with company policies, safety regulations, and DOT requirements.
· Safely operate tools, equipment, and machinery.
· Learn to use fleet management and maintenance software to document repairs and track equipment maintenance.
· Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
· Assist with inspections and identify equipment needing repair or replacement.
· Work collaboratively with senior mechanics to minimize equipment downtime.
· Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Technical or vocational training in diesel mechanics is preferred but not required.
- Basic mechanical aptitude and a strong willingness to learn.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Valid driver's license with a good driving record required; CDL is a plus.
- Basic computer skills are preferred.
- Must own a basic set of mechanic hand tools.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and move up to 70 pounds.
- Ability to work in confined spaces and at elevated heights.
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, crouch, and remain stationary for extended periods.
- Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to work extended hours and irregular schedules as business needs require.
Work Environment
This position works in both shop and field environments and is regularly exposed to moving machinery, loud noise, dust, grease, and varying weather conditions. Personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn as required.
