Hidden Gem Gardening is a small, woman-owned Berkeley-based landscaping company in its third year of full time operation. It is a one-stop-shop for residential garden needs, covering design, installations of designs, and ongoing maintenance. As each portion of the business grows rapidly, we are in need of a skilled maintenance gardener to join our small, but mighty team to care for our over 30 gardens throughout the East Bay. This is a supervisory role, so a high level of independence and leadership is expected!
This is a part-time position, Monday-Wednesday 8-4:30 (24 hours per week). After onboarding, you will likely work many days solo or with one other gardener, who you will manage. This role could become a full time position within a year.
Job Requirements:
- Minimum 2 years professional experience in landscaping; residential gardening specifically preferred.
- Deep understanding of common Bay Area plants. Ability to identify and understand the needs of garden plants (small trees, shrubs, perennials, groundcovers).
- Understanding of how to use irrigation timers, common irrigation parts, and the steps to troubleshoot an irrigation problem.
- Meet the physical demands of the job: lifting up to 75 lbs, spending long periods of time on your feet outdoors etc.
- Personable and service oriented. As a supervisor, you will become the point of contact for long-running client relationships. Communicate professionally and efficiently with clients to address their needs.
- MUST HAVE: personal vehicle that can carry maintenance gardening tools such as a green waste bucket, rake, bag of soil amendment/mulch, fertilizers/pest treatments etc. Truck preferred, but a large enough SUV can work. You will receive mileage and use reimbursements.
Preferred:
- Experience in a management/supervisory role, preferably in the landscaping industry.
- Spanish Fluency: big plus if able to communicate basic job related instructions and field basic questions in Spanish.
- Degree or training program in horticulture, plant science, environmental science, or similar
- Passion for plants, gardens, and working outdoors.
You will be expected to be able to identify and address plant related issues (water needs, diseases, infestations etc.), know when and how to prune, do general garden care and cleanup, adjust irrigation schedules and timers based on weather and circumstances, identify and fix irrigation leaks and issues etc.
We are also open to somewhat less experienced individuals who are passionate about this industry and are willing to grow with our company. But most importantly we are looking for a good person looking to work with other good people in a field that allows for independence, outdoor time, and garden stewardship.
Pay: $30.00 - $45.00 per hour
Work Location: In person
