Position Summary: Women's Advocacy Initiative is seeking qualified individuals to join the WAI Internship Program for late Summer/Fall 2026 on our Fundraising and Events team to assist in advancing our mission of empowering survivors of sexual assault. Interns gain experience in donor research, outreach and retention, event planning and marketing, partnership acquisition, and optional experience in grant proposals.
Who We Are: Women's Advocacy Initiative (WAI) is a 501c(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting survivors of sexual assault. Through seminars, educational advancement on informed consent, and a network of counselors, obgyns, and attorneys for survivors of sexual assault, WAI works to empower survivors with the tools and resources necessary to find justice and healing. This organization is rooted in the belief that financial restrictions should not be a barrier to receiving support and that survivors deserve a space to find community and share their stories without fear of shame or social stigma. We are committed to supporting survivors of all backgrounds and gender identities, and we recognize the importance of intersectionality in our work. We are dedicated to creating a safe space for all marginalized groups, and firmly believe that all forms of oppression are interconnected.
Women's Advocacy Initiative is headquartered in Washington, D.C., but applicants do not need to reside in the area as meetings are virtual.
Responsibilities:
- Identify and outreach to potential donors, corporate sponsors, and philanthropic foundations.
- Work closely with the social media team to promote fundraising efforts, event marketing, and online fundraising campaigns.
- Organize and assist in event planning logistics.
- Draft appeal letters, marketing campaigns, and proposals for donors and grants.
- Optional: All interns have the opportunity to create and take ownership of an original initiative throughout the internship, so long as it follows the values of the organization.
Requirements:
- A commitment to the mission and goals of the Women's Advocacy Initiative.
- Strong organizational and communication skills, ability to follow priorities and meet deadlines.
- Proficiency in relevant software tools including Microsoft Office and G-Suite.
- Demonstrated successful experience with fundraising and event planning.
- Willingness to show proactive behavior and seek out opportunities to contribute.
- Ability to commit to 5-7 hours/week.
- Optional, but preferred: experience working with corporate sponsors or local businesses in fundraising efforts.

Our interns are people first, employees second. We operate during business hours and only expect interns to participate within their personally outlined hours (this may vary based on time zones). As a trauma-informed organization, we recognize the trauma ingrained within this type of activism and work to facilitate a safe environment. Regardless of this, some may struggle with the content, and to reduce the possibility of re-traumatization, we encourage interns to express their needs and take space whenever necessary.
