A Day in the Life of an NDT/Magnetic Particle Inspector
Your role would be to perform non-destructive testing by way of Fluorescent Magnetic Particle and Fluorescent Liquid Penetrant inspections to ensure quality of parts or detect and identify discontinuities.
- MPI – Performs white light inspection for cleanliness prior to performing MPI; loads parts and prepares equipment; operates equipment to perform magnetization; uses black light to inspect for indications; demagnetizes and washes parts when inspection is complete; ensures specifications and acceptance criteria are met.
- Work Requirements – Reviews traveler for work instructions; pulls up job specific information in PDM system; reads and works to blueprints, technique sheets, specifications, and other documentation to determine MPI and other operating requirements.
- Non-Conformance – Double-checks inspection of product to confirm non-conformance exists; completes Non-Conformance form; identifies all non-conforming parts and separates parts on PRB cart; reports quality and other issues to Line Lead.
- Documentation – Completes traveler paperwork and double-checks for accuracy; logs in/out of system and accurately applies time to job numbers/operations; verifies part counts; creates a Certificate of Conformance to certify completion of the MPI process according to specifications for specific parts.
- Daily Upkeep/Maintenance – Wipes machine down after each job and cleans work area regularly; performs various process control checks daily and maintains documented logs; performs periodic inventory of MPI supplies; ensures product is not expired.
- Stress Relieve – Performs stress relieve for parts according to production priorities and traveler job requirements; determines oven for process, loads and monitors parts, and allows parts to cool until meeting specific temperature; completes traveler and creates a Certificate of Conformance to certify completion of the stress relieve process according to specifications.
- Communication – Communicates with manager to discuss job priorities, provide status updates, and raise concerns, questions, resource needs, etc.; participates in daily stand-up by raising concerns or turnbacks and sharing continuous improvement ideas; shares pertinent information with other team members and departments, as needed.
- Additional MPI Support – Creates MPI technique sheets for new parts, changes to parts, or if tech sheets are not available; participates in NADCAP and customer audits; works with engineering when process changes occur.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
What You’ll Need
- An ideal team player mindset: people smarts, humility and drive.
- Magnetic Particle Inspection Level II certification required. Continual training required with recertification every 5 years.
- Strong technical aptitude.
- Verbal and written communication skills.
- Attention to detail, attention to accuracy in work tasks, organizational skills.

- Understands having a sense of urgency, ability to manage time effectively and multi-task, meets deadlines.
- Ability to take initiative, seeks out answers and solutions, sees tasks through to completion.
- Uses best judgement in decisions regarding processes and problem solving.
- Ability to read blueprints, sketch sheets and other technical documentation.
- Mathematic skills with ability to accurately count and calculate numeric figures.
- Basic computer and typing skills.

This position operates Monday through Friday, from 5:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (Additional overtime and Saturdays may be required.)
