About the Role
The Estimator prepares detailed and accurate cost estimates for plumbing and HVAC construction projects. This role supports preconstruction efforts by analyzing drawings and specifications, performing quantity takeoffs, evaluating vendor proposals, and developing competitive bids. Working closely with project management, coordination, prefabrication, and field leaders, the Estimator helps ensure pricing accuracy and supports the successful transition from bid to build.
Key Responsibilities
Project Review & Takeoffs
- Review plans, specifications, addenda, and project documents to understand scope and pricing requirements.
- Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for piping, equipment, materials, labor, and installation components.
- Identify design conflicts, missing information, scope gaps, or constructability issues that may affect pricing.
Pricing & Proposal Development
- Develop accurate labor and material cost estimates, factoring in productivity, job conditions, and project constraints.
- Solicit and evaluate vendor and subcontractor quotes for equipment, fixtures, valves, and specialty materials.
- Prepare clear proposal packages including scope clarifications, inclusions/exclusions, alternates, and assumptions.
- Assist in developing value-engineering options and cost-savings recommendations.
Preconstruction Coordination
- Maintain organized estimate files, vendor quotes, and documentation throughout the bidding process.
- Work with project teams to understand installation plans, prefabrication opportunities, and logistical considerations.
- Support handoff meetings by clearly communicating estimate details, assumptions, and scope breakdowns to Project Managers.
Cost Tracking & Market Awareness
- Track historical cost data and update internal databases to support future estimate accuracy.
- Monitor labor trends, equipment lead times, material cost fluctuations, and market conditions.
- Assist with budget estimates, conceptual pricing, and early-phase project planning.
Experience & Qualifications
- Experience estimating plumbing, HVAC, or mechanical construction projects preferred.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, specifications, and coordinated documents.
- Strong analytical, mathematical, and organizational skills.
- Proficiency with estimating or takeoff software, spreadsheets, and digital plan review tools.
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with vendors, project teams, and leadership.
- Detail?oriented, thorough, and capable of managing multiple deadlines.
