Job Title: School Bus Driver - Sub (As Needed)
Location: Dayton SMART Elementary School
Reports To: Director of Transportation & Principal (As Assigned)
Position Summary:
The Substitute School Bus Driver is responsible for safely transporting students to and from school, extracurricular activities, and other school-sponsored events, following designated routes and schedules. This role ensures the safety, comfort, and supervision of students while maintaining compliance with all local, state, and federal transportation regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate a school bus safely, following established routes and schedules.
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all students on board, including proper use of seat belts and other safety equipment.
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the bus to ensure it is in safe operating condition.
- Maintain a clean and orderly bus environment.
- Follow all traffic laws, school district policies, and safety procedures.
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, school staff, and transportation supervisors.
- Report incidents, accidents, or mechanical issues immediately to the supervisor.
- Complete required documentation and logs accurately and on time.
- Attend mandatory training and safety meetings as required.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Ohio Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with passenger (P) and school bus (S) endorsements.
- Clean driving record with no recent violations that would disqualify the applicant.
- Ability to pass a background check and drug/alcohol screening.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including mornings, afternoons, and occasional field trips or extracurricular activities.
- Patience and ability to manage student behavior calmly and effectively.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to sit for extended periods while driving.
- Ability to assist students in entering and exiting the bus safely.
- Ability to perform basic physical tasks such as bending, lifting, and reaching as required.
Employment Type: Part-time on an as needed basis serving as a substitute (On-Call)
