Job Summary
The Project Engineer II supports the technical execution of assigned utility-scale renewable energy projects from late-stage development through construction, commissioning, and turnover to Operations. Working independently within established standards and with guidance on more complex matters, this role coordinates with internal stakeholders, EPC contractors, utilities, consultants, and equipment suppliers to help deliver projects safely, on schedule, on budget, and in accordance with TERP’s technical requirements.
This is an individual contributor role with no direct reports. The Project Engineer manages defined engineering workstreams, applies sound professional judgment, escalates significant risks and decisions, and contributes project experience and lessons learned to improve engineering practices.
Note: For highly qualified candidates who demonstrate significant relevant experience and a strong record of project leadership, consideration may be given to placement as a Senior Project Engineer. Compensation and responsibilities would be aligned with the appropriate level of experience and qualifications.
Key Responsibilities
Project Engineering & Execution
- Manage assigned technical workstreams or projects from development handoff through commercial operation, coordinating activities, schedules, deliverables, and action items.
- Apply TERP engineering standards and project requirements to day-to-day technical decisions; elevate material deviations, risks, and decisions to project leadership.
- Support pre-construction activities, including technical risk assessments, layout and design reviews, constructability evaluations, and cost input.
- Review and coordinate EPC design deliverables at key design stages (30/60/90/IFC/IFP/As-Built), document comments, and track responses and closeout.
Engineering Standards & Compliance
- Execute work in accordance with TERP engineering procedures, technical specifications, quality requirements, and document-control practices.
- Provide project feedback, lessons learned, and technical input to support updates to engineering standards and design criteria.
- Support compliance with applicable ISO, NERC, utility, permitting, contractual, and regulatory requirements.
Technical Risk & Commercial Support
- Identify and evaluate technical and execution risks within assigned scopes; develop mitigation actions and escalate significant issues appropriately.
- Provide technical support for EPC, balance-of-plant, equipment supply, interconnection, and other project agreements.
- Support RFP development, technical bid evaluations, vendor clarification, and selection recommendations.
- Assist with technical due diligence for acquisitions, financing, and other business activities as assigned.
Cross-Functional & External Coordination
- Coordinate technical information, deliverables, and issue resolution with:
- EPC contractors
- Interconnecting utilities
- Owner’s engineers and consultants
- Equipment manufacturers
- Internal Project Delivery, Procurement, Development, Asset Management, and Operations teams
- Prepare clear project updates, technical analyses, and recommendations for project leadership and relevant stakeholders.
Construction & Commissioning Support
- Provide on-site or remote technical support for construction questions, quality reviews, testing, and commissioning activities.
- Coordinate the investigation and resolution of field issues, nonconformances, design changes, and technical aspects of change orders.
- Support project handoff to Operations, including punch-list closeout, performance validation, as-built documentation, and turnover records.
Project Coordination & Continuous Improvement
- Coordinate assigned consultants and engineering service providers, monitoring deliverables, quality, schedule, and scope.
- Maintain organized project records, decision logs, technical action lists, and engineering status information.
- Promote safety, quality, standardization, collaboration, and continuous improvement in all project activities.
Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline required; equivalent relevant technical experience may be considered
- Minimum 4 years of relevant experience in power, renewable energy, engineering, construction, or utility-scale project delivery
- Working knowledge of solar, wind, and/or battery energy storage systems and associated balance-of-plant infrastructure
- Experience supporting EPC project execution, design coordination, construction, commissioning, and/or major equipment procurement
- Experience with applicable engineering analysis, energy modeling, or optimization tools (e.g., PVsyst or equivalent) preferred
- Familiarity with PJM and/or SERC interconnection, permitting, and utility coordination processes preferred
- Demonstrated ability to independently manage defined engineering scopes, priorities, deliverables, and contractor coordination
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, specifications, project schedules, contracts, and vendor documentation
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, organization, and stakeholder-management skills
- Willingness to travel to project sites as required (approximately 30%)
Compensation: $96,000 - $120,000; bonus eligible
