Assistant Teacher of Early Childhood Education
Reports to: The Early Childhood Director
Responsibilities:
Model and promote the JCC’s mission, values, and guiding principles through appropriate appearance, words, and actions.
Engage in opportunities to positively interact with members leading to a positive member experience.
Meet all Staff Qualifications, and follow all rules and regulations as written by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services, found at www.ocfs.ny.gov.
Teaching & Curriculum: To assist the Lead Teacher with the following:
1. Provide appropriate curriculum to the ages of the children and their developmental levels and interests, including children with developmental delays or disabilities, which promote the children’s cognitive, educational, social, cultural, physical, emotional, language, and recreational development.
2. Consistently treat children, parents, staff, and members fairly, with dignity, respect, and compassion, while maintaining confidentiality.
3. Assist lead teacher to establish, implement, and post a daily schedule of program activities that offers reasonable regularity in routines, including snack and meal periods, nap and rest periods, indoor activities, daily outdoor playtime and a variety of large muscle activities throughout the day. There must be physical activity, appropriate to the ages of the children in care, every day. Assistant teachers of infants must also include supervised periods of time during which the awake infant is placed on his stomach, back, or side allowing them to move freely and interact socially, thus developing motor skills and social skills. All schedules must include a routine of good personal hygiene practices.
4. Know and understand the Mandated Reporter Policy.
5. Provide an opportunity to choose between quiet activities and active play.
6. Provide for freedom of movement so children can develop such skills as crawling, standing, walking, and running.
7. Provide competent and direct supervision of children at all times for the health and safety of all of the children, by keeping them in sight and sound at all times. This includes supervising children from other classrooms when in common spaces or combined.
8. Provide for a program of self-initiated, group-initiated, and teacher-initiated activities which are intellectually stimulating and foster self-reliance and social responsibility.
9. Provide opportunities for learning and self-expression in small and large groups.
10. Maintain a portfolio on each child, including copies of assessment tools, samples of artwork, projects, writing, and pictures.
11. Incorporate the teaching of Jewish values and traditions throughout the year.
12. Establish and maintain positive, professional, and effective communication and supportive ties with children, staff, parents, and third party consultants to meet the needs of children and their families, thereby establishing a partnership between school and home. Work with special education teachers of individual children to meet their goals and expectations as written on their IEP’s.
13. Maintain positive discipline methods in class at all times, promoting self-esteem in children in such a way as to help children develop self-control and assume responsibility for his actions through clear and consistent rules and limits appropriate to the age and development of the child. Corporal punishment is prohibited.
Administrative and Classroom Responsibilities: To assist the Lead Teacher with the following:
1. Maintain and individualize Daily Grams sent home to parents.
2. Maintain accurate daily and monthly attendance records for each child.
3. Keep accurate attendance records of yourself in the ECE Office.
4. Conduct daily health checks of all children entering the room in which you start your day.
5. Maintain daily movement sheets, and the attendance sheets and contact lists of all of the children as you travel throughout the building and grounds.
6. Maintain daily and weekly cleaning checklists, including the preparation of daily bleach bottles.
7. Maintain student to teacher ratios at all times.
8. Monitor growth and development of each child and communicate progress/concerns to Director and parents, by maintaining developmental milestone charts and other forms of evaluation tools on each child. Schedule a minimum of two parent teacher conferences per year.
9. Maintain a nut-free classroom environment.
10. Assist in the development, evaluation, and revision of the curriculum.
11. Maintain a clean and organized classroom which is colorful and print rich, with shelves, toys, and equipment labeled and in good repair.
12. Participate in regular staff meetings and trainings, and scheduled evening events for parents including parent teacher conferences, meet the teacher night, and graduation.
13. Maintain current certifications in CPR/AED and First Aid.
14. Mentor new teachers and other staff as assigned.
15. Create and work towards mutually agreed upon goals of an annual professional growth plan set with supervisor, including meeting the required hours of OCFS approved training classes.
16. Attend all required training classes to meet the required hours as stated by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services.
17. Provide overall supervision of diapering and bathroom time.
Education Requirements & Staff Qualifications: High School Diploma or one year experience working with children less than 13 years of age.
Must also have basic knowledge of Jewish Values and Holidays to be incorporated into the curriculum.
Must be in good physical and mental health and have the energy and emotional stability necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of their positions.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
· Employee must have the ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing
· Employee must have the ability to handle, manipulate, or control objects with hands and fingers
· Employee must have the ambulatory ability to stand, walk, sit, and reach for objects
· Employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds
· Employee must have visual acuity, including close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust vision focus
· Employee must have the ability to focus and work efficiently in an environment with low to moderate noise level
Job Types: Part-time, Full-time
Pay: $18.00 - $22.00 per hour
