Our story, quickly. In 1993, Dalton Taylor started building plantation shutters one window at a time in Monroe, NC, with his wife Patti and brother Jeff. Thirty-plus years later, that family shop has grown into A Shade Above: two Charlotte-area showrooms, a third in North Myrtle Beach, and our own factory in Monroe where we still manufacture our shutters. We're still a real family company — and we're growing fast, expanding operations and building smarter tools to run the business. It's a rare chance to get in early.
A trade AI can't touch. No machine is going to climb a ladder in someone's living room, measure a bay window by hand, solve the problem that wasn't in the plans, and earn a customer's trust face to face. Learn a skilled trade like this, and you'll always have work nobody can automate away.
We hire for character first. People pay good money to have honest, trustworthy folks in their homes. Skills we can teach — character we can't. Before anything else, we want someone who is:
- Easy to get along with — the kind of person folks are glad to have around.
- Honest and dependable — you mean what you say.
- Glad to be here — ready to work and grateful for it.
- On time, every time. Take care of the little things and we'll trust you with the big ones. Do that and you'll go far here.
You'll fit well if you're a doer and a tinkerer who likes solving problems and seeing the finished result; a people person (and a dog person — one runs our office); patient with older customers and warm with kids; curious about how things get built; and interested in tech, smart systems, and motorized shades. Just finishing school and not set on college? That's fine. We'll teach you everything.
What you'll do. You'll learn a bit of everything, but mostly installation — the heart of the business. You'll ride along with our installers, working up from simple products to complex motorized and home-automation systems, mostly in nice, climate-controlled homes (you're in the AC, not the heat). From there your path can lead to installation, the office, the warehouse off I-74 and Highway 485 in Matthews, or the factory in Monroe. You'll find where you fit best.
Be straight with you: this is real physical work — on your feet, climbing ladders, lifting 50+ lbs, bending, and reaching all day. Honest, satisfying work, but not a desk job. We also run a fleet of company vehicles; prove yourself reliable and one may be yours someday. Knowing your way around an oil change or tire rotation is a plus — if not, we'll teach you.
