Job Summary / Objective:
As part of Orion Engineering Services Division, the CIVIL STRUCTURAL ENGINEER plays a crucial role in advancing technical projects. This position requires a skilled professional who can effectively lead teams, solve complex engineering challenges, and ensure the successful execution of design and development initiatives. An engineer at this level will have technical expertise with strong leadership and communication skills to drive project success and contribute to the department's overall goals.
Essential Functions:

Performs typical and routine engineering design tasks with standard techniques, including solving standard engineering problems.

Evaluates, selects, and applies standard techniques, procedures, and criteria to perform a task or sequence of tasks for conventional projects with few complex features.

Collaboratively uses judgment to determine adaptations in methods for nonroutine aspects of assignments.
-
Will assist more senior engineer in preparation of plans, specifications, designs, calculations, and reports and with complex problem resolutions.

Experience as a project design lead and capable of managing a project team, budget, scope, and schedule.

Performing project assignments that include the analyses and design of various foundation systems, design of new steel, concrete, and masonry structures, retrofit designs, and preliminary designs for estimating.

Demonstrate an extensive knowledge of current applicable codes and standards including the International Building Code, ASCE 7, ACI, AISC, etc. and be ready to apply them as well as good engineering practices.

Ability to produce detailed calculations, check calculations, composing technical reports, and design sketches to assist drafters.

A working knowledge of computer software including RISA products or other structural analysis software, AutoCAD or other drafting software, Navisworks, and Microsoft Products.

Supporting other disciplines and project management on projects, including the ability to perform on multiple projects simultaneously.

Working well with other Team members, leading teams to deliver on commitments, and having excellent oral and written communication skills.

Ability to provide technical guidance to junior Team members, consult with design leaders, and propose alternate design solutions.

Ability to develop construction specifications and scope of work documents.

Ability to review fabrication drawings and submittals for conformance to engineering drawings and specifications.

Communicate clearly and effectively with engineering colleagues, project managers, and clients on a daily basis through email, telephone, and face-to-face meetings.

Prepares portions of plans, specifications, and other project documents.

Performs research and field investigation.

Maintain availability and responsiveness during agreed-upon work hours, utilizing designated communication tools. For approved remote work, ensure accessibility via company-specified platforms during scheduled project-related times.

Follow company policies and procedures.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

This position may have limited project-related management responsibilities.

Occasionally, will conduct or participate in a field trip to an operating plant or construction site.

This requires normal hearing, the ability to stand, walk, reach, climb, and balance, clear close and distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus.

Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

Ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboard.

Must be able to bend, stoop, and climb on a ladder or up and down stairs.

Must be able to drive a company vehicle to and from job sites or office locations.

Must be able to attend job walks wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) in an operating facility in a hot climate.

Lifting up to 25 pounds may be required.
- Ability to Travel: Site visits to client facilities can be required with little or no notice. Travel may be required between Orion office locations.

The position typically performs tasks within assigned office facility but may require site visits to customer facilities.

Occasionally, may visit or be temporarily assigned to work in an operating plant or at a construction site. This may require exposure to outdoor weather conditions, loud noise, work near moving mechanical parts, electrical energy, construction equipment, vibration, fumes, chemicals, and airborne particles. For site visits, safety glasses and other safety equipment are required depending on task. Orion will provide all personnel with standard safety equipment.
- Employee work schedules are determined by the needs of the office, department and/or production. Core working hours are established to ensure that all necessary functions are covered efficiently. While these core hours are fixed, there may be some flexibility in start and end times to accommodate individual needs, provided that office and departmental requirements are met.
Skills & Qualifications:

BS or MS degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited university required.

Focus on structural coursework is a plus.
-
EIT certification required; Professional Engineering certification is preferred
-
Minimum of 5+ years of relevant work experience.
-
Experience in foundation, reinforced concrete, and steel design.
-
Experience specializing in civil & structural design of high voltage substations and/or transmission lines is preferred. Experience in civil & structural design of industrial
-
facilities or power plants is a plus.
-
Proficient with AutoCAD, Civil3D, HEC-RAS, WaterGEMS, or other similar tools.
-
Knowledge of STAAD and/or SAP2000 structural analysis software.
-
Experience with CAD software such as Autocad and/or Microstation.
-
Thorough understanding of materials, methods, and tools involved in the construction or repair of utility systems, roads, and other related structures.

Thorough understanding of safety regulations related to assigned projects.
-
Familiarity with geotechnical engineering principles.
-
Knowledge of construction materials and methodologies.
-
Working knowledge of compliance, zoning, and building legislation.

Team leadership experience.
