Why does the job exist?
This position is required to fulfill New Mexico's (NM) obligation to providing International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) and Weight Distance Tax (WDT) programs for the State of NM and to NM's carriers who operate intrastate/interstate, traveling throughout the United States and Canada. This position is responsible for the collection of Fuel Tax Revenue, and Weight Distance Revenue, and for accurate and timely reconciliation and distribution of these revenues to the state road funds for the Department of Transportation.
How does it get done?
This position will be responsible for the following duties:
Operations:
- Process IFTA Decal Applications/Renewals, and IFTA Tax Returns. Ensures key IFTA process result in efficient quality transactions.
- Key all IFTA Tax returns, print vouchers for monies received and reroute them via inter agency mail to Revenue Processing Division (RPD).
- Examine and research accounts to ensure all applicable taxes and registrations are current. Process and issue credentials.
Customer Service:
- Provide technical advice and assistance to taxpayers via phone, email, and on a walk-in basis to ensure taxpayer assistance is efficient and accurate.
- Research taxpayer accounts for tax programs, IFTA and Weight Distance. Inform taxpayer of reports or documents needed to bring account into compliance.
Refunds:
- Process and issue all WDT, and IFTA refunds, research and verify all requests for refunds within 7 working days, ensure prompt notification of request status and processing time frame to taxpayers, ensure proper audit is available to review, and taxpayer account of refund status.

Minimum Qualification
High school diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of general office, clerical, and/or administrative experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling one (1) year may substitute for the required experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment. Must be current with all tax reporting/payment. Employment is subject to post offer pre-employment criminal background check to include fingerprint checks and is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage with extended periods of sitting. Some standing, bending and reaching may be required. Must be able to lift 25 lbs. High pressure/stress situations. Some travel may be required.
