PUBLIC WORKS LABORER
VILLAGE OF MILAN
Overview:
As a Public Works Department Laborer, you will play a vital role in maintaining the infrastructure and facilities within the community. You will be responsible for performing a variety of manual tasks to ensure the cleanliness, safety, and functionality of public spaces, roads, and utilities. This position requires physical strength, attention to detail, and a commitment to improving the quality of life for residents.
Responsibilities:
1. Perform routine maintenance tasks such as mowing, trimming, and edging grass in public parks, roadways, and medians.
2. Assist with the repair and installation of sidewalks, curbs, and drainage systems to ensure proper functionality and safety.
3. Operate and maintain hand and power tools including shovels, rakes, mowers, chainsaws, and small construction equipment.
4. Operate and maintain heavy equipment, i.e.: Backhoe and Front-End Loader.
5. Assist with the maintenance and repair of public buildings, including painting, cleaning, and minor carpentry work.
6. Participate in snow removal operations during winter months, including plowing, salting, and shoveling sidewalks and pathways.
7. Perform routine inspections of public infrastructure to identify and report any maintenance or safety issues.
8. Assist with traffic control during road construction or maintenance projects, including setting up barricades, cones, and signs.
9. Respond to emergency situations such as fallen trees, flooding, or other natural disasters to ensure the safety of residents and property.
10. Follow all safety protocols and procedures to minimize the risk of accidents or injuries while performing job duties.
11. Collaborate with other departmental staff and supervisors to prioritize tasks and coordinate work schedules effectively.
Qualifications:
· High school diploma or equivalent is required.
· A valid driver's license with a clean driving record will be required.
· Previous experience in landscaping, construction, or maintenance preferred.
· Ability to operate hand and power tools safely and effectively.
· Physically fit and able to lift heavy objects, bend, stoop, and stand for extended periods.
· Strong attention to detail and a commitment to quality workmanship.
· Excellent communication skills and the ability to work well in a team environment.
· Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
· Basic knowledge of safety procedures and practices.
· Ability to follow instructions and work independently when necessary.
Working Conditions:
· This position requires working outdoors in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow.
· May be exposed to hazards and risks associated with manual labor, including lifting, bending, and operating equipment.
· Must be able to work flexible hours, including weekends, holidays, and occasional overtime as needed.
· Must reside within 7 minutes travel time to the Village for on-call purposes.
