JOB TITLE: Maintenance Diesel Mechanic
REPORTS TO: Assistant General Manager
LOCATION: 127 Fillmore Ave. Buffalo NY, 14210
JOB TYPE: Full-time, non-exempt
HOURS: Monday - Friday 7:00AM - 4:00PM, Saturdays and overtime as needed
COMPENSATION: $25-35/hr., based on skills and experience
PURPOSE: The Maintenance Diesel Mechanic is responsible for servicing and repairing all on-road and all yard equipment. Will perform preventative maintenance on diesel and non-diesel equipment and trucks. This position requires basic knowledge of vehicle systems to perform routine maintenance and repairs. Will also work on equipment and machines in multiple yard locations.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform routine vehicle maintenance (fuel trucks, adjust brakes, fix lights and other small mechanical problems)
- Perform basic preventative maintenance on all diesel vehicles, heavy equipment such as material handlers, loaders, excavators, forklifts, etc.
- Perform basic preventative maintenance on all semi-trucks and trailers (lowboys, dump, car haulers, etc.)
- Troubleshoot and repair all types of diesel and gas engines
- Diagnose and repair semi-trucks and trailers
- Repair, replace, recondition, disassemble, weld, and examine parts and engines
- Inspect brake systems, steering mechanisms, wheel bearings, and other important parts to ensure that they are in proper working condition
- Perform routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries and lubricating equipment and machinery
- Maintains a basic knowledge of a vehicle's mechanical an electrical system to perform basic preventative maintenance and some repair functions
- Use diagnostic tolls to test vehicle components
- Perform quality inspections
- Specialize in vehicle transmission systems
- Works in accordance with all federal and corporate compliance guidelines (i.e., safety, DOT, MOT)
- Perform assignments in a timely manner
- Perform other facility maintenance duties
- Learn and work in accordance with procedures and instructions. Policies and safety, environmental and security rules and guidelines
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned or apparent
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Certification from an accredited technical school or; 1 or 2 years of related work experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Preferred experience or coursework in diesel mechanics, maintenance principles and machine repair practices
- Valid driver's license
- Knowledgeable in all aspects of basic hand and power tools, and proper use
- Knowledgeable on the proper inspection, removal, installation and alignment, and lubrication of bearings, gears, belts, and chains
- Good mechanical aptitude and math skills
- Stonge analytical skills and theoretical background in mechanical systems
- Work autonomously or act as an effective team member, exhibiting good inter-personal skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and prioritize
- Attention to detail and accuracy
- Problem solving skills
- Knowledge of and experience using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.)
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Walking: Frequent walking throughout the facility both indoors and outdoors, and on various surfaces that may be uneven or slippery
- Carrying: Occasional carrying of light objects
- Pushing: Infrequent pushing of objects, possibly related to production support
- Pulling: Infrequent pulling of objects, possibly related to production support
- Bending: Occasional bending during production support
- Reaching: Infrequent reaching with hands and arms
- Handling: Frequent handling of parts and/or tools
- Other: Frequent use of computer, keyboard, and monitor
- Specific vision includes close vision and ability to adjust focus
- Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and to handle other computer components
- Lift product and other objects of various shapes, sizes and weights (up to 50 lbs with or without assistance occasionally)
- Physically able to participate in sessions, presentations, and meetings
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Outside work in the Yard is where temperature and weather extremes (heat, cold, rain) may be encountered.
- Work will take place in an industrial environment, with noise, dust and fumes.
- Noise level in the work environment can be moderate at times.
