The Rating Business Systems Analyst (BSA) serves as a subject-matter-focused liaison between business stakeholders and the development team, with a primary emphasis on insurance policy rating and underwriting rules. This role is responsible for analyzing rating requirements, underwriting manuals, and business rules to produce precise, testable system specifications that ensure accurate premium calculation and policy issuance.
The Rating BSA works closely with underwriting, product, and engineering teams to translate complex rating logic into clear functional requirements. This position requires strong analytical skills, deep attention to detail, and advanced Excel capabilities, as well as prior experience working with insurance rating structures and underwriting guidelines.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Analyze insurance underwriting manuals, rating worksheets, and regulatory requirements to translate business rules into detailed system requirements
Document rating logic, calculations, decision tables, and edge cases with a high degree of precision
Create detailed requirement specifications, use cases, and acceptance criteria for rating and policy issuance functionality
Partner with software developers to clarify rating logic and ensure correct interpretation of underwriting rules
Support and facilitate User Acceptance Testing (UAT), with a strong focus on validating rating accuracy and calculation outcomes
Use Excel extensively to analyze rating scenarios, validate calculations, reconcile discrepancies, and support troubleshooting
Collaborate with QA and development teams to investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve rating-related defects and production issues
Maintain comprehensive documentation for rating rules, system behavior, and changes over time
REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
Prior experience working with Property & Casualty insurance policy rating required
Strong familiarity with insurance underwriting manuals and rating guidelines
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including complex formulas, lookup functions, large-dataset analysis, macros, and validation techniques
Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to break down complex rating logic
Extremely high attention to detail and accuracy
Clear, concise oral and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex logic to both technical and non-technical audiences
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and deliver high-quality work with incomplete or evolving requirements
Experience working in a fast-paced, ambiguous, and rapidly changing environment
Advanced Excel skills, including complex formulas, lookup functions, macros, pivot tables, and large‑dataset analysis.
PREFERRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
Experience supporting or implementing rating engines or policy administration systems
Familiarity with regulatory-driven rating changes and compliance considerations
Experience documenting decision tables, rating matrices, or complex business rules
Experience writing SQL Server and/or Mongo queries
Jira and Confluence (or equivalent software) experience
Experience working in Agile or Kanban software development environments
Associate degree or equivalent education required; Bachelor degree preferred
2+ years of experience in an IT, product, systems analysis, or technology-related role or equivalent experience working in a business domain with strong technical collaboration
