After-School Chess Instructor

Compensation: $45-$55 per session (depending on experience)
About the Role
We're looking for an engaging and dependable Chess Instructor to lead a weekly after-school chess program for elementary students in Pleasant Hill.
This role is a good fit for someone who has a solid understanding of chess and enjoys working with children in a structured but fun learning environment. The instructor will help students build confidence, critical thinking, problem-solving, patience, and sportsmanship through guided instruction and gameplay.
Responsibilities
- Lead engaging, age-appropriate chess lessons and activities.
- Teach chess fundamentals, including piece movement, rules, strategy, tactics, and gameplay.
- Support both beginner and more experienced students.
- Facilitate practice games, challenges, and structured chess activities.
- Create a positive, inclusive, and well-managed learning environment.
- Adapt instruction based on student age, experience, and skill level.
- Maintain appropriate student supervision and follow school-site procedures.
- Communicate professionally with school staff and program coordinators.
- Submit brief after-class session reports and maintain timely communication with the program team.
Requirements
- Strong working knowledge of chess.
- Experience working with elementary-aged children.
- Ability to explain chess concepts in a clear and age-appropriate way.
- Strong classroom management and communication skills.
- Dependable, organized, patient, and professional.
- Ability to commit to the full Wednesday program schedule from September 16 through December 16, 2026.
- Must be able to complete required TB clearance and background check before beginning the assignment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience teaching or coaching chess.
- Experience working in after-school, camp, tutoring, recreation, or youth enrichment programs.
- Experience supporting students with different chess skill levels.
- Tournament or competitive chess experience is a plus.
