Position Title: Medical Receptionist / Optometric Medical Billing Coordinator

We are a patient-focused optometry practice dedicated to providing exceptional vision and medical eye care. We are seeking a highly organized and patient-service-oriented Medical Receptionist with experience in optometry and medical billing to join our growing team.
Position Summary
The Medical Receptionist / Medical Billing Coordinator serves as the first point of contact for patients while also supporting insurance verification, medical billing, coding, and claims management. The ideal candidate is friendly, detail-oriented, and experienced with both front-office operations and optometric medical billing.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Reception & Scheduling
- Greet and check in patients professionally and courteously
- Answer incoming phone calls and assist with appointment scheduling
- Confirm appointments and manage patient recalls
- Verify patient demographics and insurance information
- Collect copays, balances, and payments
Insurance & Billing
- Verify eligibility and benefits for vision and medical insurance plans
- Obtain referrals and prior authorizations as needed
- Submit and track medical claims accurately and timely
- Review and resolve claim denials and rejections
- Post insurance payments and patient payments
- Assist with patient billing questions and account balances
- Ensure compliance with insurance and HIPAA regulations
Optometric Medical Coding
- Understand ICD-10 diagnosis coding and ophthalmic/optometric CPT coding
- Assist providers with documentation requirements for medical visits
- Support billing for diagnostic testing including OCT, visual fields, fundus photography, and other ancillary testing
- Maintain accurate patient records within the electronic health record system
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Minimum 1 year of medical reception or healthcare office experience
- Strong customer service and communication skills
- Proficiency with computers and electronic health records
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
Preferred
- Experience working in an optometry or ophthalmology practice
- Knowledge of vision plans (VSP, EyeMed, Tricare)
- Knowledge of medical insurance billing and claim submission (Medicare, UHC, BC)
- Familiarity with CPT, ICD-10, and medical coding
- Experience with insurance verification and authorizations
