TxDOT is looking for a General Engineer Tech I or II in the Paris District that will be in the Sherman Area Office in Sherman, TX. This job opening is for one General Engineer Tech I or II depending on business need and applicant's qualifications and experience. Qualification and experience will determine the applicant's position and pay. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on the applicant’s work experience, education, skill level and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs.

Position Description
Performs and coordinates advanced transportation engineering operations or maintenance support work such as construction and/or complex maintenance contract inspection; light and heavy equipment operation; roadway maintenance; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. May serve as a lead worker. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.
Essential Duties:
General Engineering Tech I or II:
-
Inspects construction and routine and non-routine contract maintenance methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.

Moves equipment, tools, materials, and products.
-
Drives a state vehicle to inspect traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices, safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.

Monitors and maintains construction records to ensure contractors comply with federal requirements regarding Equal Employment Opportunity, on-the-job training programs, the Historically Underutilized Business and the Disadvantaged Business Enterprise programs.

Operates light and heavy equipment; performs preventive maintenance and repairs on equipment; performs roadway maintenance.

Oversees complex maintenance and spot improvement contracts.

Performs detail design and quantity checks for plans, specifications, and estimate (PS&E).

Researches plan sets and reviews proposed construction plans, specifications, and estimate (PS&E) and supporting documents for accuracy and completeness to ensure compliance with state and federal laws, policies, procedures and design guidelines.

Prepares plans, specifications, and estimate (PS&E) using automated programs; reviews plans, enters data and updates, stores and maintains PS&E documents and files.

Assists Area Engineer in planning and coordinating Area Office operations.

Consults with contractors superintendent on work progress and maintenance problems; reviews equipment utilization data and time/cost estimates.

Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
Experience:
General Engineer Tech I: 4 years in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work experience.
General Engineer Tech II: 6 years in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.
