Overview
We are seeking a Senior Tax & Accounting Manager to help lead tax return preparation, accounting tie-downs, client communication, and internal workflow. This person will be responsible for a mix of preparing, reviewing and managing individual and business tax returns, tying down year end for businesses, identifying tax planning opportunities, and helping ensure that client work is accurate, complete, and delivered timely.
This role is ideal for someone with small-to-mid-size public accounting experience who enjoys working with closely held businesses and is comfortable getting into the details of the client’s books, tax return, and overall financial picture.
Duties/Expectations
- Manage and review individual, partnership, S corporation, C corporation, fiduciary, and nonprofit tax returns.
- Prepare and review accounting tie-downs to ensure book income, balance sheet accounts, payroll, fixed assets, loans, equity, and tax return reporting are accurate and complete.
- Review client accounting records, QuickBooks files, trial balances, general ledgers, payroll reports, depreciation schedules, and supporting documentation.
- Identify and communicate tax planning opportunities for closely held businesses and individual clients.
- Assist with client questions related to tax notices, estimated payments, payroll matters, bookkeeping issues, and general business accounting.
- Help manage workflow during tax season and throughout the year.
- Work directly with firm owners, staff, and clients to keep projects moving and maintain strong client relationships.
- Train, review, and support staff accountants.
- Assist with year-end planning, tax projections, entity planning, and cleanup of client accounting records.
- Contribute to process improvements, internal checklists, client communication standards, and firm growth.
- Proven experience in public accounting or corporate finance with a focus on tax experience and technical accounting expertise.
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex financial concepts including GAAP standards, regulatory compliance accounting, and financial statement preparation.
- Hands-on experience with various accounting software platforms including QuickBooks or equivalent systems for bookkeeping and financial analysis purposes.
- Excellent analysis skills with the ability to interpret financial reports accurately; proficiency in account reconciliation and balance sheet reconciliation is essential.
- Exceptional organizational skills combined with a proactive approach to problem-solving; ability to lead teams effectively while maintaining high standards of accuracy and compliance.
Ideal Candidate
- CPA license preferred, but strong CPA candidates or experienced tax professionals will be considered.
- 5+ years of public accounting experience preferred.
- Experience with small-to-mid-size CPA firms is strongly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of individual and business tax returns, especially partnerships and S corporations.
- Comfortable tying accounting records to tax returns and identifying when the books do not make sense.
- Experience with QuickBooks Desktop, QuickBooks Online, trial balances, payroll reports, fixed assets, and general ledger review.
- Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with clients.
- Detail-oriented, organized, and able to manage multiple deadlines.
- Willing to take ownership of client work rather than simply prepare returns.
- Strong analytical skills, judgment and willingness to ask questions when something does not look right.
- Interest in long-term growth with the firm, including potential leadership and partner-track opportunities.
