Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced underwriting leader to oversee our revenue-based financing underwriting team. This role combines hands-on underwriting responsibilities with leadership, quality control, and risk management oversight. The ideal candidate will be a strong credit professional who can independently evaluate complex transactions while ensuring consistency, accuracy, and compliance across the underwriting department.
This position is responsible for managing underwriting operations, reviewing credit decisions, mentoring underwriters, and helping shape company credit policy and portfolio strategy.
Key ResponsibilitiesLeadership & Team Oversight
- Supervise and support a team of underwriters and junior credit analysts
- Review, audit, and verify underwriting decisions to ensure consistency with company policy and risk tolerance
- Provide coaching, mentorship, and ongoing training to underwriting staff
- Conduct regular file reviews and quality assurance checks
- Establish underwriting performance standards and monitor productivity metrics
- Assist with hiring, onboarding, and performance evaluations for underwriting personnel
- Serve as escalation point for complex or high-risk transactions
Advanced Credit Analysis & Risk Management
- Personally underwrite and approve complex revenue-based financing transactions
- Review business financial statements, tax returns, bank statements, and merchant processing data
- Analyze cash flow trends, debt obligations, and repayment capacity
- Evaluate industry-specific risks, business models, and operational stability
- Determine funding structures, pricing, factor rates, and conditions for approval
- Identify fraud indicators, documentation inconsistencies, and operational red flags
- Monitor portfolio performance and recommend adjustments to underwriting strategy based on loss trends and market conditions
Quality Control & Compliance
- Ensure underwriting decisions comply with internal policies and applicable lending regulations
- Maintain consistency in credit decisions across the underwriting team
- Review underwriting documentation for completeness and accuracy
- Assist in developing and updating underwriting guidelines, procedures, and risk models
- Work closely with compliance and legal teams on regulatory matters
- Participate in portfolio review meetings and credit committee discussions
Collaboration & Communication
- Partner with sales and business development teams to structure deals appropriately
- Communicate approval conditions, declines, and risk concerns clearly and professionally
- Support collections and servicing teams on high-risk or troubled accounts
- Present complex transactions and portfolio insights to executive leadership
- Help bridge communication between underwriting, operations, and executive management
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Business, or related field preferred
- 3+ years of commercial underwriting, alternative lending, or credit risk experience preferred
- Prior leadership or senior underwriting experience strongly preferred
- Strong understanding of small business financial analysis and cash flow underwriting
- Experience with revenue-based financing, merchant cash advances, or fintech lending products preferred
- Strong knowledge of risk assessment methodologies and portfolio management
- Experience reviewing and approving the work of other underwriters
- Advanced Excel and underwriting software proficiency
- Ability to manage deadlines and operate in a fast-paced environment
