The Production Manager (PM) serves as a critical member of the CIVIC’s artistic and executive team, bringing technical expertise to staff, volunteers, and community partners. The PM will manage all production elements of the CIVIC including our 200-seat Wilson Auditorium, 80-seat Warner Studio Theatre, and other on- and off- site production venues. PM manages the production staff of the CIVIC which consists of a resident scenic designer, construction manager, resident properties designer, and costume shop manager. The PM supervises, trains, and mentors a range of volunteer technical staff in addition to maintaining and safeguarding the technical assets of the facility.
Budgeting & Financial Management
- Participate in the preparation and management of production and technical budgets
- Advise CIVIC staff on the technical specifications, costs, and usage of technicalequipment required for specific events
- Make recommendations to CIVIC leadership regarding short- and long-term purchases of technical equipment
- Track expenditures across all shops (scenery, lighting, props, costumes, sound) to prevent cost overruns
- Partner with the Executive Director in matters of annual budgeting and fundraising
Scheduling and Project Management
- Oversee the logistical and physical production aspects of all events produced by the CIVIC, and serve as the leading voice for the Production arm of the organization
- Create and enforce the master technical schedule for the season including build deadlines, designer runs, tech weeks, and strike dates
- Facilitate clear communication between guest directors, designers, and volunteers which can consist of designers, actors, backstage crew, shop assistants, etc
- Schedule, organize and run regular production meetings to keep all team members aligned on deadlines and design expectations
- Oversee proper use and maintenance of all CIVIC performance spaces
- Provide technical details and necessary production timelines for directors, designers, technical partners, production team members, volunteers and renters
- Interface directly with production teams, partners, and renters to ensure external technical elements (music, video content, presentations, etc.) are submitted to the CIVIC on schedule for a smooth and efficient production
- Monitor the condition of venue equipment including lighting, sound, and riggingequipment; arrange for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints; perform preventive maintenance on equipment as needed with CIVIC technical staff
- Serve as the primary point of contact for facility and space management, ensuring the stage, backstage, and dressing rooms remain clean and organized
- Partner with the Operations Manager in matters of scheduling and facilities management including providing production calendar needs
- Advise and assist in all areas of CIVIC, and help to foster a collaborative atmosphere among all artists, designers, actors, and staff
Team Leadership
- Hire, supervise, and evaluate technical department heads (Resident Scenic Designer, Costume Shop Manager, Properties Master, Construction Manager)
- Supervise, train, and mentor a range of volunteers and contract staff with a variety of skill levels and abilities
- Assist in recruiting, training, and the assignment of technical staff for individual shows
- Participate in regular executive, staff, and production meetings to guide planning and provide technical expertise
- Facilitate clear communication between guest directors/designers and production team members on each individual production
- Participate on the CIVIC’s Play Selection Committee
Health, Safety, & Compliance
- Ensure all workshop practices, backstage operations, and onstage effects comply with local and federal safety regulations (such as OSHA standards)
- Oversee safe operations for specialized technical elements like theatrical firearms, pyrotechnics, automation, or aerial rigging
- Maintain a safe, respectful working environment for all artists and technicians
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Fiscal Responsibility: Proficiency with spreadsheet software (like Excel) and experience managing five-to-six-figure production budgets.
- Problem-Solving & Agility: The ability to pivot quickly when a design fails structurally, a material shipment is delayed, or a technical element isn't working during tech week.
- Interpersonal Skills: Exceptional diplomacy. PM regularly mediates between the high-flying creative desires of directors and the rigid physical or financial constraints of the shop crew.
- Technical Understanding: Knowledge of multiple technical disciplines (carpentry, rigging, lighting systems, audio engineering, and costume construction).
Preferred Experience
- A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (BFA/MFA) in Technical Theatre, Production Management, or Stage Management and/or
- Three to five years of experience working in leadership roles within technical theatre (e.g., as an Assistant Production Manager, Stage Manager, or Technical Director).
Salaried, 40+ hours per week; Reports to Executive Director

Pay: $55,000.00 - $65,000.00 per year
