Urban Discovery Academy (UDA) is a TK–8 public charter school in San Diego, California. The Extended Learning Instructor provides a safe, engaging, and supportive after-school environment for students enrolled in the Extended Learning Program. This position supervises students, facilitates enrichment and academic activities, promotes positive behavior, and helps create an inclusive learning community. The ideal candidate is positive, collaborative, flexible, patient, service-oriented, technologically proficient, and committed to UDA's mission of supporting student success.
CLASSIFICATION » This is an at-will, classified 10-month position applicable to Fair Labor Standards Act.
LINE OF CONTINUITY/SUPERVISOR » Extended Learning Coordinator (daily supervision) and School Principal or designee (evaluation).
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS »
Essential elements of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:
Student Supervision and Program Delivery
- Supervise and ensure the safety and well-being of students throughout the after-school program.
- Plan and facilitate engaging educational, literacy, art, music, recreation, homework support, and enrichment activities.
- Lead whole-group and small-group instruction appropriate for assigned grade levels.
- Support students' academic, social, and emotional development.
- Supervise students during transitions, snack, outdoor play, homework time, and other program activities.
- Maintain a positive, inclusive, and structured learning environment.
Student Behavior and Communication
- Foster positive student behavior using established behavior management practices.
- Observe, document, and communicate student concerns or unusual behaviors to appropriate school personnel.
- Work collaboratively with the Extended Learning Coordinator to implement behavior support strategies.
- Build positive relationships with students, families, and staff.
Program Operations
- Follow assigned schedules and daily program procedures.
- Maintain accurate attendance and sign-in/sign-out records.
- Maintain student confidentiality in accordance with school policies and applicable laws.
- Keep classrooms and program spaces clean, organized, and safe.
- Assist with student arrival, dismissal, clerical support, and other program needs as assigned.
- Attend required staff meetings, trainings, and professional development.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge & Skills
- Knowledge of effective instructional and classroom management practices for school-age children.
- Understanding of child growth and development.
- Strong communication, organization, and record-keeping skills.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications and standard office equipment.
- Ability to follow written and verbal directions with minimal supervision.
- Ability to build positive working relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
- Ability to remain calm, professional, and solution-oriented in a fast-paced environment.
Education & Experience
- High school diploma required; college coursework or post-secondary education preferred.
- Ability to pass a proficiency exam or demonstrate required knowledge through coursework.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification.
- Successful completion of all required background clearances.
- Valid California driver's license and reliable transportation.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, kneel, crouch, and climb stairs throughout the workday.
- Ability to supervise students indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Ability to frequently communicate with students, families, and staff.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to use computers, office equipment, and instructional technology.
- Ability to travel between school sites as needed.
Job Types: Part-time, Contract
Pay: $18.50 - $25.00 per hour
