About the Role:
The Project Engineer is an entry level role, responsible for supporting the technical execution, coordination, and performance of electrical and civil construction projects. This position bridges field operations and project management, helping ensure work is completed in accordance with drawings, specifications, budget, and schedule.
The Project Engineer supports project success through plan review, field coordination, subcontractor oversight, contract documentation, cost tracking, and schedule tracking. This role regularly collaborates with Superintendents, Project Managers, subcontractors, and field crews to help resolve technical issues, coordinate work activities, and maintain project controls.
This position is designed as a developmental step toward Project Management and provides hands-on exposure to construction operations, contract administration, and project controls.
What You’ll Do:
Technical Execution & Plan Review:
- Review contract drawings, specifications, and bid documents to fully understand project scope and requirements.
- Develop working knowledge of MDOT 2020 Standard Specifications and applicable codes.
- Identify constructability concerns, scope gaps, and potential risk areas.
- Interpret plans and specifications for field crews and subcontractors.
- Review Bid item quantities and work with owner and subcontractor quantity reconciliation. (Proficient in MS Suite preferred)
Field Coordination & Oversight:
- Regularly visit project sites to monitor progress and verify compliance with plans and specifications.
- Coordinate with Superintendents to support production planning and material sequencing.
- Proactively identify schedule risks and assist in implementing corrective action.
- Support resolution of field conflicts, scope changes, and unforeseen conditions
Develop relationships with customers which include.
- Prime Contractors, MDOT clients, Local Agency clients and Private work owners.
Cost & Schedule Control:
- Assist in developing and maintaining project schedules.
- Monitor installed quantities and production rates.
- Analyze cost variances and support monthly cost-to-complete projections.
- Assist in reviewing and developing purchase orders within budget parameters.
- Evaluate scope changes and communicate financial impacts to the Project Manager.
- May be responsible for managing some work (with PM/Program Manager oversight and assistance).
- Responsible for assisting and performing cost forecasting, schedules, manpower forecasting and requests, etc.
Submittals, RFIs & Contract Administration:
- Prepare, track, and manage RFIs.
- Review and process submittals and material certifications (knowledge of MSL’s (materials source lists and MDOT specification & certifications preferred).
- Support subcontractor scope review and contract administration.
- Assist in subcontractor agreement preparation and change order evaluation
Support issue resolution and claims documentation
Preconstruction & Procurement Support:
- Participate in project kickoffs and preconstruction meetings.
- Assist in scope review, subcontractor outreach, and bid package evaluation.
- Review material quotes and coordinate procurement of long-lead items.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil or Electrical Engineering, or related field.
- 1–3 years of construction experience (field or office).
- Exposure to MDOT or public agency projects preferred.
- Experience supporting project documentation or field reporting.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc).
- Proven efficiency in time-management with capacity to assist with multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and record-keeping skills
