Responsibilities
- Review medical records and documentation to assign appropriate CPT (Current Procedural Terminology), ICD-9, and ICD-10 codes for procedures and diagnoses.
- Prepare and submit clean claims using Electronic Medical Record (EMR) or Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems to insurance companies and third-party payers.
- Follow up on unpaid or rejected claims through effective medical collection strategies, ensuring timely resolution.
- Verify patient insurance coverage, benefits, and eligibility prior to billing processes.
- Maintain accurate and detailed medical records related to billing activities, ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations.
- Collaborate with medical office staff to clarify documentation discrepancies and improve coding accuracy.
- Stay updated on changes in DRG (Diagnosis-Related Group) classifications, coding guidelines, and industry best practices to optimize reimbursement.
Qualifications
- Proven experience in medical billing with a strong understanding of medical terminology and medical records management.
- Familiarity with DRG, CPT coding, ICD-9, ICD-10, and ICD coding systems.
- Experience working with EMR/EHR systems for billing and record keeping purposes. Knowledge of Athena EMR preferred.
- Knowledge of medical collection procedures and insurance claim submission processes.
- Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Strong communication skills for interacting with insurance companies, healthcare providers, and patients.
- Prior experience in a medical office environment is preferred but not required; training will be provided for the right candidate.
