Position Summary
The Registered Dental Hygienist plays a vital role in helping patients achieve optimal oral and systemic health. This position goes beyond traditional hygiene by educating patients on the relationship between oral health, airway function, sleep quality, TMJ disorders, inflammation, and overall wellness. The ideal candidate is passionate about patient education, enjoys building long-term relationships, and is eager to learn advanced concepts in airway and TMD dentistry.
ResponsibilitiesClinical Care
- Perform comprehensive periodontal assessments and periodontal charting.
- Provide preventive dental hygiene services, including prophylaxis, scaling and root planing, periodontal maintenance, fluoride treatments, and sealants.
- Take and interpret digital radiographs and intraoral photographs.
- Perform oral cancer screenings and comprehensive soft tissue evaluations.
- Assess occlusion, wear patterns, muscle tenderness, joint function, and signs of parafunctional habits.
- Screen patients for airway dysfunction, sleep-disordered breathing, and obstructive sleep apnea risk factors using established protocols.
- Recognize signs and symptoms of TMD and communicate findings to the doctor.
- Assist with documentation related to airway, sleep, and TMD evaluations.
Patient Education
- Educate patients on oral hygiene techniques and preventive care.
- Explain the connection between oral health and systemic health.
- Discuss the relationship between breathing, sleep quality, TMJ disorders, and oral health.
- Educate patients about periodontal disease, inflammation, nutrition, and lifestyle factors affecting oral health.
- Reinforce treatment recommendations and help patients understand comprehensive treatment plans.
Collaboration
- Work closely with doctors, assistants, and treatment coordinators to deliver comprehensive patient care.
- Participate in case presentations and interdisciplinary treatment planning.
- Support implementation of airway, TMD, and sleep treatment protocols.
- Maintain accurate clinical documentation and treatment records.
Technology & Clinical Excellence
- Utilize digital radiography, intraoral cameras, and dental software efficiently.
- Maintain infection control and OSHA compliance.
- Stay current with advancements in preventive dentistry, airway health, sleep medicine, and TMD through continuing education.
- Contribute to maintaining efficient clinical workflows and an exceptional patient experience.
Qualifications
- Current Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) license.
- Current CPR certification.
- Strong communication and patient education skills.
- Excellent organizational and time-management abilities.
- Team-oriented with a positive, professional attitude.
- Experience with digital radiography and electronic dental records.
- Interest or experience in airway dentistry, sleep medicine, myofunctional therapy, or TMD is preferred but not required. Training will be provided for the right candidate.
