PRIMARY PURPOSE
Gilbert House Children’s Museum welcomes over 100,000 visitors each year, supported by friendly, knowledgeable staff who deliver outstanding customer service. The Café Coordinator is responsible for creating a safe and welcoming experience for all guests in the café. This includes preparing and selling high-quality food and beverage items, accurately completing point of sale transactions, managing barista staff, maintaining appropriate inventory levels, and ensuring each visitor feels valued and well cared for during their time at the museum.
Schedule is Tuesday through Saturday 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES – % reflects annual needs.
Playgrounds Café Operations (40%)
- Ensure guests are greeted, served, and assisted in a timely and courteous manner, and that their beverage and service needs are met.
- Maintain a clean, welcoming, and organized café environment, including counters, equipment, seating, and service areas.
- Provide guidance, training, and support to new baristas; communicate with the Membership Coordinator regarding shift coverage and scheduling needs.
- Communicate with Membership Coordinator about daily café operations, including guest flow, beverage quality, equipment issues, and customer inquiries.
- Using the POS system to ring up beverage and food sales.
- Promote and sell café items to support and sustain the organization.
- Assist with product merchandising and restocking to keep the café and retail displays tidy and fully stocked.
- Assist with training staff on café procedures and guest service expectations.
Supervise Baristas (20%)
- Provide guidance, training, and support to new baristas.
- Train staff on café procedures and guest service expectations.
- Train baristas on equipment, service, and POS system.
- Provide guidance, training, and support to the Café team. Arrange coverage for absences.
- Hire staff by reviewing applications and interviewing following best practices.
- Schedule staff to ensure the operational needs of the café are met and employee time is utilized properly as defined by the Executive Director.
- Perform required evaluations, keep documentation of interactions, and provide feedback on performance.
- Train new staff with an orientation and demonstrating expectations for work performed.
- Use communication tools and in person conversations to provide ongoing training of GHCM procedures and expectations.
- Perform annual and 90-day reviews with employees you supervise.
Management of Cafe (40%)
- Selecting items to sell, ordering them, and establishing prices.
- Managing the receipt, storage, and inventory of merchandise.
- Overseeing the visual merchandising of the store.
- Participating in the development and implementation of sales promotion campaigns.
- Maintain a clean, welcoming environment in the Cafe.
- Provide guidance, training, and support to the Café team. Arrange coverage for absences.
- Set and communicate schedules for the Café being aware of seasonal needs.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- One year of experience as a barista.
- Strong communication and analytical skills, as well as the ability to make quick decisions and multitask.
- Current Oregon Food Handler Card or ability to obtain one before beginning work.
- Experience providing friendly customer service in a café, retail, museum, or other public-facing environment.
- Ability to safely prepare and serve food and beverages while following cleanliness, sanitation, and safety procedures.
Pay: $23.00 - $25.00 per hour
