Make a measurable difference
Want to make a tangible impact on your local community and move the needle on sustainability? Do single-use plastics and water pollution bum you out? Would you like to help your local business community send less plastic and food waste to the landfill and prevent pollution before it happens? If you're passionate about sustainability, organized, and have a track record of bringing results, this role is for you.
Environmental Innovations, Inc. is a certified B Corp and California Green Business dedicated to helping businesses, institutions, government, and individuals innovate beyond the status quo toward more equitable and sustainable solutions that benefit people, planet, and profit. We turn environmental challenges into prosperous opportunities.
About the Role
Environmental Innovations, Inc. (EI) is seeking an enthusiastic, organized sustainability professional with experience in sales, marketing, outreach, technical assistance, and project management. This part time position offers work supporting environmental programs throughout the San Mateo and Alameda Counties, with the potential for an expanded role with more hours as project needs and funding allow.
As a Green Business Coordinator you will primarily support Green Business Programs throughout the region, helping small and medium-sized businesses achieve their sustainability goals through practical improvements to their operations under the standards and protocols of the California Green Business Network (CAGBN). This position will also provide support for other EI programs, including field work and outreach related to energy efficiency programs and single-use plastic foodware reduction campaigns.
The successful candidate is resourceful and results-driven, comfortable making the business case for sustainability, adjusting course when plans hit obstacles, and building strong relationships with clients, program partners, and community stakeholders.
This is a remote and field-based position serving businesses in Alameda and San Mateo counties. Candidates should be located within or near one of these counties and must be willing to travel throughout the assigned service area on a weekly basis. Spanish or Chinese language skills are strongly preferred.
What You’ll Do
Green Business certification and technical assistance are at the heart of this role. You will help local businesses become more sustainable while supporting them in meeting applicable regulatory requirements.
In an Average Week, You Will:
- Serve as the public face of the Alameda Green Business program — representing EI at events, meetings, and in general business service interactions
- Recruit businesses to participate in Green Business Certification and other EI programs through phone calls, site visits, outreach, and follow-up
- Guide businesses through the certification process — arranging audits, conducting site visits, documenting findings, and completing follow-up tasks
- Provide technical assistance to businesses, answering questions on certification requirements and helping them navigate regulatory topics like single-use plastic foodware, solid waste, stormwater, and wastewater and related issues.
- Help businesses overcome challenges and perceived barriers by leading with empathy and clearly communicating requirements
- Collaborate day-to-day with program partners, including county staff, utility representatives, and regional network contacts
- Track activities, results, and budget allocations using EI's database and project management tools, and review project progress and priorities with the Regional Manager and clients.
- Organize your own schedule, files, contacts, expenses, and project documentation
- Identify and communicate trends, marketing/intern needs, and field observations to managers and staff
- Provide additional field support as needed, including compliance visits related to local ordinances, outreach for single-use plastic foodware reduction campaigns, and energy efficiency program support.
From Time to Time, You Will:
- Celebrate program successes by visiting newly certified businesses, delivering certificates, taking photos, and supporting promotional efforts.
- Plan, coordinate, and promote events.
- Support the creation of newsletter content and other communication tools as needed.
Technical Skills and Experience
- Familiarity with Google Workspace, including Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and related applications.
- Experience using spreadsheets, including basic formulas, data imports, data organization, and data entry in Google Sheets and/or Microsoft Excel.
- An understanding of environmental issues and sustainable business practices.
- Experience working with the small business community and/or local utility partners.
Additional Requirements
- Reliable transportation and the ability to travel throughout Alameda and San Mateo counties on a weekly basis.
- Experience in sales, marketing, outreach, or customer engagement.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative team.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to balance multiple priorities and complete work within budget constraints.
- A proactive, adaptable approach and willingness to take on a variety of responsibilities.
- Ability to initiate, build and maintain rapport with a variety of stakeholders, from business owners to government partners.
