Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans, Inc. (MSHV) is a non-profit agency that serves over 1,000 homeless and at-risk veterans and their families annually. MSHV is dedicated to ending veteran homelessness and restoring hope. Through housing, employment support, and essential wraparound services, we equip at-risk veterans and their resilient families to rebuild stable, independent lives.
THE OPPORTUNITY
We are looking to fill a critical role as a Veteran Employment Manager for our Wheaton, IL location. This compassionate leader, reporting to the Deputy Executive Director. While representing MSHV’s core values, this position is responsible for the operation and growth of the employment program. With a majority of time spent conducting employment case management, the individual in this role will provide hands on employment services to veterans throughout the greater Chicagoland, and NW Indiana areas, assisting them with obtaining employment, increasing their income, and problem-solving. This role will lead MSHV to be at the forefront of employment services for veterans by strategically growing the program and creating partnerships with businesses.
WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING
- Meet with veterans individually and in small groups to ascertain skills, interests, and gaps.
- Developing individual service plans to help the veterans meet their goals.
- Advocating to and for clients and making appropriate professional contacts. Work towards empowering clients to be productive members of the community; focusing on their unique skills.
- Understand the full range of MSHV’s services and demonstrate the ability to assess client(s) needs to access services as appropriate.
- Once placed, along with the case manager, follow up with veterans and employers to provide support and resources.
- Actively manage client needs: conduct eligibility assessment, establish and maintain rapport with clients; provide supportive services; assist with intake paperwork; ensure client needs are addressed.
- Offer information and referral to community resources and other community partners.
- Enter and track client data using the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) and internal data trackers.
- Ensure regulations, schedules, ethics, and confidentiality requirements are followed.
- Participate in weekly case management meetings with the team to ensure comprehensive services are rendered.
- Compose and disseminate information about the program, including but not limited to the success stories of clients, drafting final proofs of success stories, and program description for funders and social media.
- Creating and tracking best practice measurements in the SSVF and employment space.
- Drafting and submitting annual budget documents and analysis for the program on a quarterly/annual basis.
- Stay abreast of leading topics in the field of veteran employment services to provide training to staff and generate new content in community forums.
- Seek ways to represent MSHV at community organizations to raise awareness regarding the program.
- Assist MSHV in five-year strategic goals to expand services throughout Illinois, Indiana, and across the Midwest.
- Initiate and cultivate relationships with employers throughout Illinois and Northwest Indiana
- Develop curriculum for employment classes and training including, but not limited to, resume writing, interviewing skills, and budgeting classes.
- Ensure MSHV is at the forefront of marketing veteran clients; including best practices for client’s online presence, empowering the client to demonstrate their value and enhance their career.
- Train and manage volunteers who will facilitate classes.
- Research local labor trends to develop plans for targeted business relationships.
- Increase number of clients served in the program including the creation and implementation of a plan to gain newly discharged veterans as clients.
- Develop and maintain relationships with outside stakeholders including local universities to ensure veterans have access to resources.
- Initiate business planning and key performance indicators for the program.
- Have a working knowledge of DOL and IDES rules and regulations.
- Collect and report specific data to obtain and retain grants (in conjunction with the Veteran Grants Manager).
- Represent MSHV to local, state, and national organizations as assigned.
WHAT YOU WILL BRING
ESSENTIAL:
- A bachelor’s degree or relevant work experience
- 1+ years of work in related field
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to instill confidence and inspire commitment to the goals of the organization
- Excellent relationship building skills, strong organization, and follow up skills
- Strong interpersonal skills, including ability to communicate effectively and professionally
- High degree of initiative and ability to motivate and engage
- Must be able to successfully manage multiple priorities
- Skills in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams, and PowerPoint) are essential
- Database entry, accuracy, and reports (training provided)
- Must be available for occasional evening/weekend hours as needed.
- Valid Illinois driver’s license.
DESIRED:
- Veteran status a plus.
- Previous experience in working with homeless individuals and families, particularly chronic a plus.
- At least one year of working in a program serving veterans is preferred.
- Experience in recruitment and/or other aspects of human resources.

Pay: $60,000.00 - $80,000.00 per year
