New Heights Charter School is Massachusetts’ only public school that involves all grades (6-12) in the Early College approach. Nearly all our 11th and 12th graders are full-time students on a college campus with younger students earning college credits at the school. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Pick up and deliver students as per set route and schedule. Which may include in town, out of district, door to door and athletic trips.
- Obey all traffic laws.
- Observe all mandatory safety regulations for school buses.
- Be attentive to traffic and weather conditions while staying on schedule and ensuring the safety of passengers.
- Transport only authorized students.
- Pick up and discharge students only at authorized stops.
- Check bus seats and floor, including under seats, for students after each trip.
- Notify supervisor(s) immediately in case of mechanical failure or delay in more than five (5) minutes in scheduled route or pickups; complete accurate reports as required.
- Report all crashes and/or on-board accidents and injuries immediately per protocol and promptly complete accurate reports and forms to your supervisor.
- Responsible for maintaining a safe environment within the school bus by enforcing rules of conduct and responding to emergencies using a variety of pupil management skills.
- Report student misconduct according to established procedure.
- Communicate with students, parents, staff and colleagues in a professional and courteous manner and present as a positive representative of New Heights Charter School.
- Ensure the assigned bus is clean and fueled daily.
- Perform pre- and post-trip safety inspections using Department of Transportation (DOT) standards and promptly report mechanical issues.
- Provide first aid and emergency support to students as appropriate, in line with training and certification of your school bus training.
- Ability to handle multiple routes, schedule changes, and school charters (including during weekends, afternoons, evenings, and school vacations).
- Demonstrate consistent punctuality and reliability in adhering to daily routes, extracurricular activities, and school-sponsored trips.
- Ability to provide additional school support by working closely with direct staff and students when needed.
- Demonstrate high standards of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information.
- Attend all scheduled training, in-service and safety meetings as required.
- Performance of other job-related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Operate a school bus safely and professionally on a regular scheduled route and time schedule.
- Ability to read, understand policies, procedures, and related information. Also provide and follow verbal, written, and demonstrated instructions, directions, and guidelines related to the job.
- Ability to write basic reports and general correspondence.
- Ability to interact appropriately with a diverse student population of children of different age groups.
- Ability to communicate calmly and effectively with students, parents, and staff, including in high-stress or emergency situations.
Physical Demands:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit for extended periods of time. Employees are also required to talk, hear, stand, and walk. The employee may be required to use hands to finger, handle, feel, and/or reach. Employees are occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch.
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds (updated from 25 pounds). Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Job Requirements:
- Must be 21 years of age
- High School Diploma or GED
- Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with the following endorsements: School Bus (S), Passenger (P), and Air Brake Certification.
- School Bus Driver Certificate from the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities.
- Must provide Department of Transportation (DOT) training records as required under federal and state regulations.
- Current CPR and First Aid certification (or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire).
- Driving record in good standing; no previous license suspension(s) for drug or alcohol related offenses.
- Must pass CORI, SORI, fingerprint-based background checks, and other screenings as required by Massachusetts law.
- Ability to listen and understand information.
- Ability to communicate information so others will understand it.
- Citizenship, residency or work Visa in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Minimum of two (2) years of school bus driving experience.
- Familiarity with roadways within Brockton, Randolph, and Taunton, interstate and out of district
- Commitment to ongoing professional development, including participation in safety workshops, school policy training, and pupil management refreshers.
Position Details
- Pay: $30.00 – $35.00 per hour
- Must be available to work routes as early as 5:30am to 5pm. Available for after 4pm trips and charters, weekend charters (with advance notice).
- Must be flexible to work non-driving duties to support school staff, students and bus/ van fleet management.
