Job Summary
Responsible for specialized distribution center tasks such as loading, unloading, order picking, shipping, returns, forklift operation, fabrication, and counter work, or may have a generalized role working across all departments. Periodically move and stage trailers in the yard, and occasionally move trailers to and from local offsite lots. If selected for this position, the company will run a Motor Vehicle Report (MVR). An acceptable MVR report is required.
Major Tasks, Responsibilities and Key Accountabilities
- Completes tasks such as loading, unloading, sorting, picking, stocking, staging, fabrication, and transportation of goods.
- Loads and unloads materials to and from designated storage areas, such as racks, shelves, or vehicles. Stacks or piles materials, such as lumber, boards, or pallets.
- Installs protective devices, such as bracing, padding, or strapping, to prevent shifting or damage to items being transported.
- Receives and fills orders for distribution.
- Conducts safety inspections, implements safety training, knows safety policies, maintains an organized work environment, monitors hazardous materials, and follows emergency evacuation plans to ensure a safe distribution center.
- Performs other duties as assigned to include moving trailers to and from shipping and receiving doors or moving to and from designated parking areas on the yard.
- Follows all DOT regulations and company safe driving guidelines and policies. Immediately reports any and all safety hazards.
- May operate forklift or other machinery to complete tasks.
Nature and Scope
- Selects correct processes from clearly prescribed rules, past practices, or instruction. Seeks advice and guidance on non-routine or problem areas from supervisor. Deviations from the norm are cleared by the supervisor.
- Under close supervision, exercises limited latitude/independent judgment. Work typically involves detailed checks or close review of output by a senior coworker and/or supervisor.
Work Environment
- Typically located in a comfortable environment but with regular exposure to factors that may cause noticeable discomfort or a moderate risk of accident or illness, such as temperature extremes, moving machinery, loud noises, and fumes.
- Requires intermittent periods during which continuous physical exertion is required, such as walking, standing, stooping, climbing, lifting, and maneuvering material or equipment that may be heavy (50+ pounds) or awkward.
Education and Experience
- HS Diploma or GED strongly preferred.
- 0-2 years of experience in area of responsibility.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience operating commercial vehicles, yard tractors, straight trucks, or other equipment used to transport and stage trailers.
- Experience safely moving, backing, and positioning trailers in a yard, warehouse, or distribution center environment.
- Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with applicable endorsements, when required for the position.
- Clean Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) and demonstrated commitment to safe driving practices.
- Experience operating forklifts, pallet jacks, or other material handling equipment; forklift certification preferred.
- Familiarity with warehouse, distribution center, shipping, receiving, or loading operations.
- Strong attention to safety, including adherence to DOT regulations, equipment inspections, and established operating procedures.
- Ability to work outdoors, perform physically demanding tasks, and handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
