Duties and Responsibilities
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.
Develops and conducts safety and occupational health training and education programs; inspects and evaluates workplace environments to ensure they comply with local and federal regulations; recommends measures to protect workers and the general public from potentially hazardous work methods, processes, or materials.
Assesses County facilities, processes, and statistical data to identify trends, evaluate conditions and recommend appropriate corrective action. Prepares written reports of findings and discusses recommendations to ensure mitigation of unsafe conditions. Notifies building managers when deficiencies and/or violations are found; coordinates re-inspections to ensure compliance.
Investigates and analyzes accidents to identify root cause and recommend corrective actions by utilizing occupational safety and health standards and regulations for guidance and reference and while using the County's current safety manual.
Assesses County claim and loss information, processes, incident and statistical data to identify trends. Evaluates conditions and recommends appropriate corrective action to ensure prevention practices are in place.
Identifies hazards, risks, and/or safety issues and recommends steps to eliminate or reduce hazards to an acceptable risk level. Coordinates and consults with employees to ensure implementation of safe practices and precautions.
Facilitates certified training courses for County employees including but not limited to general safety practices, CPR, defensive driving, and operation of forklifts, aerial manlifts, and other heavy equipment.
Develops various safety training materials including toolbox talks, bulletins, and presentations to raise awareness of potential hazardous environments, unsafe conditions and work-related incidents.
Reviews and collects data for inclusion into the County's Risk Management Information System (RMIS) for statistical analysis and study in order to compile and form proactive actions, plans or programs.
Attends staff meetings and committee meetings as needed. Prepares and assists with agendas, meeting minutes, and reports of inspection findings and divisional training trends.
Performs related work as assigned.
