Educational and Experience Requirement
Bachelor’s degree in related field. Master’s degree and one year of experience working in the field of Residence Life helpful. Proven management and leadership abilities. Strong verbal and nonverbal communication skills. A combination of education, experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered. Must be willing to live on campus in a residence hall and be willing to work a flexible schedule to include nights and weekends.
Nature & Purpose of Position
Oversees the operation, maintenance, and administration of residence halls and supervises resident assistants. Maintains an atmosphere conducive to the health, safety and well-being of all residents. Full-time live-in position in a university residence hall, focused on community engagement and student development.
Primary Responsibilities
Provides direct supervision to a team of 6-16 student staff members. Leads weekly staff meetings and professional development, focusing on staff community. Conducts regular 1-1’s and an end of semester evaluation with student staff. Utilizes systems of accountability for staff processes, procedures, and department expectations, following corrective action processes when necessary. Participates in Residence Life recruitment, selection, training, and development of student staff each semester. Oversees daily residence hall operations to support community development and well-being. Maintains daily student contact and face to face availability for students through office hours, building walk throughs, and attendance of hall programs. Manages implementation of residential curriculum with assigned area, including guidance of staff, oversight of proposals, evaluations, and program funding. Maintains an atmosphere conducive to the health, safety, and wellbeing of all residents. Holds regularly scheduled office hours Monday – Friday from 8-5pm. Processes paperwork in a timely manner based on due dates and in accordance with all policies and procedures. Oversees room occupancy and resident room change requests. Coordinates hall openings and closings. Collaborates with residence life facilities and custodial teams to manage hall facility needs Manages monthly health and safety inspections and coordinate follow up for reporting protocols. Participates in an overnight and weekend 24-hour on call duty rotation covering a portion of university residence halls throughout the year which may include holidays. Leads on-call crisis and emergency response to ensure residents’ safety. Actively engages with and seeks to resolve issues for students of concern to ensure their support. Ensures accurate reporting and provides follow-ups with student and parent concerns. Implements required emergency drills and complete required paperwork or follow-up. Enforces policy and manages reporting in StarRez ensuring accurate documentation and timely sanction completion. Maintains full communication with the Department of Residence Life staff regarding all areas of building/area operation. Fulfills a secondary collateral assignment in the department. Expected to complete professional development and training opportunities. Serves as liaison formally and informally with other departments in Student Affairs. Cultivates ongoing relationships across departments to enhance student support and community cohesion. Supports larger university initiatives (Saturday@Sam, Orientation, Bearkat Kickoff, etc.). Performs other related duties as assigned.
Other Specifications
Key responsibilities include building management, efficient administration, supervision, community engagement, crisis management, and student success. Must be available to work a flexible schedule including nights and weekends. Must have a valid Texas Drivers’ License at time of employment. Able to physically perform the job’s essential duties, including walking upstairs, frequently crossing campus, daily face to face service, and use of a department cell phone and computer. Must be willing to live on campus in a residence hall and be willing to work a flexible schedule to include nights and weekends.
This position may be designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA)
There are no set working hours; however, the Department of Labor, Title 29, Part 785.23, Code of Federal Regulations, allows the exact hours worked under these circumstances to be determined by a reasonable agreement considering all of the pertinent facts. Therefore, as a condition of employment the incumbent agrees the average number of hours worked each week will be equal to the full time equivalency appointment. Contacts with students, parents, and other university departments are extensive.
