GENERAL JOB FUNCTION:
Montague Area Public Schools is seeking a compassionate and skilled Student Support Counselor to provide support for high school students, with a particular emphasis on those identified as at-risk. This role combines direct counseling services, program coordination, and family/community engagement to ensure all students have access to the resources they need to succeed socially, emotionally, and academically.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s degree from accredited college or university in School Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or related field
- Valid Michigan School Counselor License or equivalent professional certification
- Two years of experience working with high school students, particularly those at risk of academic or behavioral difficulties preferred
- Demonstrated knowledge of adolescent development, SEL, trauma-informed practices, and intervention planning
- Experience with MTSS, PBIS, and behavior intervention planning preferred
- Training in restorative practices and trauma-informed care preferred
- Familiarity with community-based support services and school-based wraparound models preferred
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to connect with diverse students and families
- Strong organizational, time-management, and problem-solving abilities
- Ability to handle sensitive information with professionalism and discretion
- Cultural responsiveness and a commitment to educational equity
- Collaborative team player with a student-centered approach
- Proficiency in using student data systems, Microsoft Office, and Google Workspace tools
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT & COORDINATION
- Lead or contribute to school-based programs that enhance student well-being, engagement, and inclusion, such as:
- Social-emotional learning (SEL) programs
- Peer mentoring and leadership initiatives
- Summer bridge and new student orientation programs
- Extracurricular inclusion efforts
- Collaborate with district leaders and community partners to pilot and expand initiatives that address student needs
FAMILY & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
- Build strong, trust-based relationships with parents and guardians to support student growth and engagement
- Coordinate family engagement opportunities such as resource fairs, educational workshops, and school events
- Serve as a key liaison between school and community organizations to facilitate referrals and ongoing support for students and families
- Assist with student enrollment, transition support, and re-engagement efforts for students returning to school
DATA & PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of student counseling, progress monitoring, and support services
- Analyze student data (attendance, behavior, academic performance) to inform services and interventions
- Evaluate program effectiveness and adapt strategies based on student outcomes and school needs
- Actively participate in school-based teams, staff meetings, and professional development focused on trauma-informed care, SEL, and MTSS
- Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and student support teams to build an inclusive and supportive school culture
