Job Description - Mechanical Design Engineer
The Mechanical Design Engineer works with engineering and the technical sales team to design high-quality and efficient mechanical solutions. This position plays an integral role in helping acquire new business and provide quality and dependable solutions to our customers. The Mechanical Design Engineer is directly responsible for design and layout; engineering support during assembly, system commissioning and troubleshooting, evaluating future technologies, and developing internal intellectual property products and offerings.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Designs new mechanisms, assemblies, components, adaptations, and variations of custom and/or existing machines and investigates alterations of designs to improve both the cost and functional performance of the equipment. Projects often include robots, robot risers and robot EOAT (End of Arm Tooling)
- Completes assigned engineering project or designs within project due date and within budgeted hours and dollars.
- Develops timely and accurate bills of material for all parts and assemblies.
- Determines and documents appropriate equipment lists, spare parts, and inventory to be maintained by the customer to service and run machines.
- Designs and develops specifications on tools, fixtures, and equipment for manufacturing processes.
- Displays an emphasis on problem prevention by anticipating and avoiding undue risks and non-conformances.
- Ensures correctness of proportions, consideration of stresses, speeds, weights and other related design criteria including the specification of commercial components.
- Prepares design layouts, assists with the preparation of engineering estimates.
- May oversee the assembly and testing of equipment to verify design concepts.
- Works with minimal supervision but initiates appropriate action to clarify design requirement, design parameters, objectives and interpretation of assignments.
- Performs engineering calculations to determine loads, stresses, speeds, weights, strengths of materials, statics, dynamics, etc.
- Mentors, coaches and trains others.
- Champions internal processes.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
- Must possess a minimum of a Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering
- Must have at least 7+ years’ experience in mechanical design of custom machinery or capital equipment
- Must have FEA experience in Inventor or Solidworks.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, math or physics preferred
- Successful record of accomplishment in coordinating large, complex orders or major redesigns of equipment with past designs having robots and robot EOAT incorporated.
- Prior experience working in a manufacturing environment
- Demonstrated excellence in thoroughness of engineering work, design creativity and product innovation.
- Strong PC and CAD Inventor proficiency
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Demonstrated team player
- Customer service orientation
- Must be able to provide clear models and drawings required for fabrication and machining
- Demonstrated understanding of quality assurance concepts, criteria, methods, etc.
- Excellent project management skills
