Controller / Construction Accounting Manager
Residential Construction Company | Burlington, MA
Full-Time | In Office, 5 Days per Week
A high end residential construction company is seeking an experienced, highly organized and hands-on Controller to oversee the day-to-day financial operations of our companies and related entities.
The company does approximately $10–15 million in annual revenue, alongside an affiliated custom cabinetry and millwork business generating approximately $1–2 million annually. This position also provides bookkeeping and financial support for several real estate investment properties owned by the principals.
This is an important, trusted position within our company. We are looking for someone who takes genuine ownership of the financial function, understands both the big picture and the smallest details, and is comfortable working in the fast-moving environment of a construction business.
Responsibilities
The Controller is responsible for the day-to-day accounting and financial management of the businesses, including:
- Full-cycle bookkeeping and general ledger management
- Bank and credit card reconciliations
- Accounts payable and accounts receivable
- Payroll processing and related administration
- Cash management and cash-flow planning
- Expense review, categorization and reconciliation
- Job-cost accounting, including ensuring expenses are assigned to the correct project and cost code
- Working closely with Project Managers to ensure project costs, receipts, invoices and other financial documentation are complete and accurate
- Monitoring outstanding receivables and coordinating collections as needed
- Managing vendor and subcontractor payment inquiries and enforcing established payment terms
- Maintaining accurate financial records across multiple business entities
- Preparing regular financial reporting for company principals
- Assisting with budgeting, forecasting and other financial analysis as needed
- Providing bookkeeping and accounting support for the principals' real estate investment properties
- Identifying discrepancies, missing information or potential financial issues and proactively resolving them
- Helping maintain strong financial controls and disciplined accounting procedures throughout the organization
Who We're Looking For
The ideal candidate is an experienced Controller who is equally comfortable reviewing financial statements and digging into the details of an individual transaction.
Construction accounting experience is a significant plus, particularly experience with job costing, cost codes, subcontractor payments and project-based financial reporting.
Just as importantly, we are looking for someone with the right temperament for the role. Our ideal Controller is:
- Proficient in Quickbooks Online and Excel, a must
- Exceptionally detail-oriented, organized and diligent
- Highly accountable and takes strong ownership of their responsibilities
- Is looking for a long term role and isn't someone who jumps around regularly
- Protective of the company's financial interests and comfortable establishing and enforcing appropriate financial controls and boundaries
- Calm and level-headed, including during periods when cash flow requires careful management and prioritization
- Able to distinguish between something that requires immediate attention and the normal day-to-day pressures of running a growing business
- Comfortable communicating firmly and professionally with vendors and subcontractors regarding invoices, documentation and established payment terms
- Collaborative and patient when working with busy Project Managers who may need consistent follow-up on receipts, coding, approvals and other administrative requirements
- Proactive rather than reactive and willing to follow an issue through until it is fully resolved
- Personable, easygoing and able to work well with a wide range of personalities
- Comfortable working directly with company ownership and handling confidential financial information with discretion
Qualifications
- Significant prior experience as a Controller, Accounting Manager, Senior Bookkeeper or similar hands-on financial leadership role. CPA background a major plus.
- Strong command of bookkeeping and accounting fundamentals
- Experience managing AP, AR, payroll, reconciliations, cash flow and financial reporting
- Strong understanding of job costing and project accounting preferred
- Construction industry experience strongly preferred
- Experience working across multiple entities or businesses is a plus
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- High degree of accuracy, discretion and personal accountability
Position Details
This is a full-time, five-day-per-week, in-office position based at our office in Burlington, Massachusetts. This is not a remote or hybrid role.
We offer three weeks of paid vacation in addition to company holidays.
This position is best suited to someone who enjoys being an integral part of a company, wants real ownership over the financial function, and takes pride in keeping the financial side of a busy organization accurate, organized and under control.
Pay: $115,000.00 - $145,000.00 per year
