Job Description
Auburn Counseling Services is seeking a compassionate, skilled, and motivated Jail Clinician to join our multidisciplinary team. This role offers a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact by providing mental health and substance use disorder services to individuals involved in the criminal justice system.
The Jail Therapist works collaboratively with Nevada County Behavioral Health (NCBH), jail medical staff, and other community partners to coordinate comprehensive, person-centered care. This position is based within the NCBH facility and plays a vital role in assessment, treatment, and discharge planning.
Duties
The Jail Clinician will:
- Review and monitor results of the Brief Jail Mental Health Screen (BJMHS) and complete screening tools such as the Brief Questionnaire for Initial Placement (BQUIP) and Universal Screening Tool (UST)
- Provide individual therapy, counseling, and/or case management services to incarcerated individuals diagnosed with a Serious Mental Illness (SMI) and/or Substance Use Disorder (SUD)
- Collaborate and communicate with criminal justice partners to advocate for appropriate treatment, placement, and continuity of care
- Develop comprehensive discharge plans, including systems that ensure connection to community-based services for individuals identified as high-risk or diagnosed with SMI or SUD
- Coordinate care with multiple agencies and providers to support treatment engagement and successful transitions
- Attend required jail security briefings and complete an 8-hour PREA (Prison Rape Elimination Act) training
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation using electronic health record systems
Qualifications
- Master’s-level degree or licensure in a related mental health discipline (e.g., Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or Marriage & Family Therapy)
- Strong clinical, organizational, and communication skills
- Comfort working in a correctional or forensic setting and collaborating across systems
- Proficiency with computers and electronic documentation systems
