Responsibilities include answering 911 and non-emergency calls, dispatching police and fire/EMS units, maintaining radio logs, conducting computer checks, monitoring and feeding prisoners, taking minor citizen reports, performing typing and data entry, and completing other related duties as assigned.
Hourly compensation ranges from $29.4166 at entry to $33.1492 after 24 months, with opportunities for overtime and a competitive benefits package.
Monitors; receives calls; and broadcasts on public safety radio; receives requests for medical assistance; fire and police and other emergency services by telephone or radio.
Creates computer records of the daily activities of police officers and fire personnel; such as emergency runs; fire calls; vehicle stops; and other activities; prepares non-felony incident reports and one-car accident reports; enters data into the computer on house watches; warrants; and other items.
Remains cognizant of complaints; designated priorities; and availability of units capable of responding to reported incidents.
Answers non-emergency phones; disseminates information to the public regarding City and/or departmental operations or transfers to the appropriate party; assists citizens who telephone with complaints and questions; provides information and assistance for other City departments.
Determines nature of required assistance; location; and other pertinent information; differentiates between routine; priority; and emergency requirements; deploys nearest appropriate public safety response
to scene of event; transmits pertinent information regarding service requirements; and assigns backup assistance as required.
Monitors fire alarm panel for indications of emergency; maintains up-to-date City street maps; uses fire computer to assist fire units responding to emergencies; maintains fire log.
Completes arrest paperwork on prisoners; collects bond; assigns court date; monitors the jail during shift; feeds prisoners.
Performs front desk duties including receiving applications for gun permits and parking permits; greeting citizens; releasing impounded vehicles; and passing out applications for employment.
Initiates interrogation of local; state; and nationwide criminal justice data banks to obtain information on warrants; driver history; missing persons; vehicles; firearms; and miscellaneous property; assesses the response for compatibility with the request and relays it to the field unit.
Using security cameras; monitors a variety of areas throughout the building during shift including lobby; garage; tunnel; and courtroom.
Uses computer terminal to enter information into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) on vehicles; persons; property; and criminal history; transmits and receives coded and conventional messages to and from other jurisdictions via LEIN and other established communication links; maintains
computerized information files.
May train new Police Service Assistants as assigned.
Performs a wide variety of other tasks such as changing recording machine tape; changing printer paper; monitoring TDD phone; and maintaining call in lists.
Female PSAs may search female prisoners as necessary and appropriate.
Provides effective and efficient customer services; promotes and maintains responsive community relations.
Performs related work as required.
Graduation from high school (or GED); experience as a telephone operator; dispatcher; or similar
work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the following knowledge;
abilities; and skills:
Knowledge of data entry devices and standard office machines.
Ability to learn the principles involved in the operation of radio; telephone; computer; and related
communications equipment.
Ability to learn local and state laws and ordinances as required.
Ability to learn City’s geographic area.
Ability to learn codes; signals; phonetic alphabet; and military time.
Ability to assimilate a multitude of unrelated information and activities at once and identify possible
emergency contingencies.
Ability to detect the scope and magnitude of an emergency.
Ability to set priorities; ability for rapid decision making combined with mature judgement when
confronted with the critical or unexpected.
Ability to speak concisely and distinctly; ability to develop rapport; maintain composure; and deal
effectively with hysterical/irate people.
Ability to maintain required records and perform data entry.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Minimum Requirements:
Ability to work all three shifts; one year of police and/or dispatch experience preferred; minimum age 18; high school diploma or GED; valid Michigan driver’s license with good driving record; U.S. citizenship. Must be able to use data entry systems and standard office equipment; operate radio and computer-aided dispatch systems; learn City geography, codes, signals, phonetic alphabet, and military time. Must be able to assess emergencies, set priorities, multitask, and make sound decisions under pressure. Clear and concise communication and the ability to maintain composure with distressed individuals are essential. Background check and skills testing may be required.
