Supervisor Level I
Position Summary
The Supervisor Level 1 is responsible for planning and coordinating all material flow activities across inventory control, stockroom and shipping to ensure uninterrupted manufacturing operations, accurate inventory management and on-time shipments. This role is responsible inventory control and inventory accuracy, provides hands-on support as well as plans, coordinates, and directs daily Stores operations to maintain workflow continuity, inventory accuracy, and service to internal customers.
This position leads, trains, and provides direct supervision and support to assigned employees, enforces work standards, and promotes a safe, organized, and team-oriented work environment. The Supervisor works in areas where forklifts and other powered industrial equipment are in use and is responsible for enforcing safe material-handling practices, traffic controls, and certification requirements. When operating powered industrial equipment, this role is considered safety-critical and must comply with OSHA standards (29 CFR 1910.178) and all company safety policies.
Essential Functions and Basic Duties
1. 1. Leadership, Employee Management and Cross-Functional Collaboration.
· Provide supervision to assigned stockroom and shipping personnel.
· Manage daily work to ensure efficient use of personnel, equipment and space to meet the needs of manufacturing and shipping.
- Provide instruction, training, coaching and feedback to department employees to ensure proper procedures and quality standards are followed.
- Evaluate employee performance through coaching, feedback, and performance reviews.
- Maintain a positive and professional work environment that promotes teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Resolve operational problems or employee concerns within the scope of responsibility and report complex issues to management, as needed.
- Participate in cross-functional initiatives focused on cost reduction, efficiency, and service improvement.
- Provide regular reporting to management regarding inventory accuracy, material flow performance and operational risks.
2. Material Flow Operations
- Provides hands-on operational support as a working supervisor performing tasks in the stockroom, shipping and manufacturing floor when required.
- Plan, coordinate, and oversee stockroom, shipping, and material movement activities to support manufacturing and order fulfillment.
- Establish, implement, monitor and enforce standard work practices to ensure consistent and efficient material flow throughout the facility.
- Coordinate material priorities to meet changing production demands and customer requirements.
- Recommend and implement improvements in material handling, storage efficiency, and inventory processes.
- Oversee coordination with carriers and logistics providers and ensures all shipments are prepared accurately, labeled correctly, and accompanied by proper documentation for on-time deliveries and pickups.
3. Inventory Control and System Accuracy
- Maintain accurate inventory records through cycle counts, audits, reconciliation activities, and year-end physical inventories.
- Create, implement, and maintain inventory and process procedures. Establish, implement and monitor best practices to ensure system integrity.
- Identify, investigate, and resolve discrepancies between system quantities and physical inventory and resolve pending system transaction errors.
- Review material cost variances, correct discrepancies, and document reasons for variances.
- Monitor inventory levels, remove expired inventory, and process nonconforming material.
· Correct negative inventory balances, over-receipts, receiving errors, picker errors and related system transactions to maintain inventory accuracy and proper material flow.
- Ensure all material transactions are coded correctly so appropriate departments are credited or charged.
- Ensure that all inventory transactions are recorded accurately in company systems.
4. Safety, Forklift Use, and Compliance
- Promote and enforce compliance with company safety policies and procedures.
- Ensure employees are trained and certified in the safe operation of forklifts and powered industrial trucks (PIT).
- Enforce traffic patterns, load-handling practices, and safe material-staging procedures.
- When required to operate forklifts or PIT equipment, comply with OSHA standards (29 CFR 1910.178) and company certification requirements.
- Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas to reduce risk and improve efficiency.
Education/Certification
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Associate degree in supply chain, logistics, business, or related field is preferred but not required.
- Forklift / Powered Industrial Truck certification required or ability to obtain and maintain certification.
Experience Required
- Minimum of five years of experience in material management, inventory control, warehouse environment, and manufacturing environment is preferred but not required.
- Experience with ERP/MRP systems, shipping/receiving operations, inventory accuracy programs, and material handling procedures required.
- Prior supervisory or management experience is preferred but not required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Manufacturing, Warehousing & Distribution Knowledge: Strong understanding of manufacturing, warehousing; including inventory control, material flow, and shipping processes.
- Systems & Documentation: Strong attention to detail and knowledge of inventory management systems, ERP software, product label printing systems, and standard office applications, with the ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.
- Leadership & Supervision: Effective leadership and team-building skills with the ability to train, coach, and motivate employees, manage performance, and promote accountability.
- Forklift & Material Handling Safety: Knowledge of forklift and powered industrial truck (PIT) safety requirements, material-handling practices, traffic controls, and load-handling procedures, with the ability to obtain, maintain, and enforce required PIT certification and recertification in accordance with company policies and OSHA standards.
- Organization & Time Management: Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks, balance workloads, and meet operational deadlines.
- Communication & Collaboration: Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to coordinate effectively across departments and maintain positive working relationships.
- Problem Solving & Decision Making: Demonstrated problem-solving and decision-making skills with a focus on efficiency, accuracy, and timely resolution of issues.
- Adaptability & Continuous Improvement: Ability to adapt to changing production demands and priorities in a fast-paced environment, with a commitment to quality, safety, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Physical Requirements and Work Conditions
- Mobility: Regularly required to stand, walk, bend, reach, stoop, and move throughout warehouse and manufacturing areas. May occasionally climb stairs, ladders, or step platforms to access materials stored at various heights.
- Lifting and Handling: Frequently lifts, carries, pushes, or pulls materials or containers weighing up to 50 pounds. Mechanical assistance (such as forklifts, pallet jacks, carts, or hoists) is expected for heavier loads.
- Vision Requirements: Must be able to read and interpret inventory labels, barcodes, work orders, shipping documents, and computer screens. Requires close and distance vision, depth perception, color recognition, and the ability to adjust focus in areas with moving equipment and forklift traffic.
- Hearing and Communication: Must be able to hear and respond to verbal instructions, warning signals, alarms, and equipment sounds in areas with moderate to high noise levels, and communicate effectively with employees and drivers.
- Work Environment and Safety: Work is performed in both a warehouse/manufacturing and office environments. These environments include exposure to noise, temperature fluctuations, and industrial conditions. Required to follow all safety policies, wear appropriate PPE, and remain alert to hazards such as forklift traffic and moving machinery.
- Work Schedule: Overtime or weekend work may be required to support production, inventory, or shipping demands.
- Stamina: Requires sustained focus and physical activity throughout the day, balancing time between standing, walking, and computer or administrative tasks.
