YOUTH CHOIR DIRECTOR
Start Date: August 2026
Position Type: This is a part-time, hourly position that we anticipate will require 12-15 hours per week. Hours will be flexible but must accommodate afternoon, evening and/or weekend rehearsal and performance schedules.
Schedule: Flexible- teaching three days per week (Program hours*: Mon., Tue., Thu. & Fri. 3:15 – 5:45 pm; Wed 1:00 - 5:45 pm plus a one-hour team meeting each week TBC) *Hours are subject to change based on program need and school schedule.

ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW
Bay Area Music Project (BAMP) is an El Sistema-inspired after-school music education program that supports the social-emotional and academic needs of children in under-resourced communities by providing high-quality music instruction, nutritious snacks and homework assistance, regardless of ability or circumstances. Our staff embraces the social and musical missions of our program; they nurture both the individual and the musician.
JOB SUMMARY
Bay Area Music Project is seeking an experienced, creative, and self-motivated Choir Director to establish and lead a new TK–8 choral program at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Academy in Sausalito.
This is an exciting opportunity for an educator who thrives in a collaborative environment and is energized by building a program from the ground up. The Choir Director will develop and direct engaging choral ensembles for elementary and middle school students, creating a joyful, inclusive learning environment where students build vocal technique, musicianship, music literacy, confidence, creativity, and teamwork through singing.
Working closely with BAMP's Music Director and Teaching Artist team, the Choir Director will help shape a high-quality, sequential choral curriculum that reflects BAMP's commitment to artistic excellence, social-emotional learning, and culturally responsive music education. The ideal candidate is an inspiring educator who can cultivate student enthusiasm, build strong relationships with families and school staff, and establish a vibrant choral program that grows with the school community. As the program develops, students will have opportunities to perform for families and the broader community throughout the school year.
Responsibilities
- Provide a safe, positive and culturally responsive learning environment where students can learn vocal fundamentals and ensemble skills
- Select repertoire suitable for children’s voices and appropriate for training students in choral singing.
- Prepare choir ensembles for community performances
- Act as a mentor and build a positive rapport with students to build classroom community
- Oversee repertoire and student placement in ensembles in collaboration with instrumental Teaching Artists
- Work with Music Director to create benchmark goals and progress tracking across all ensembles
- Timely correspondence with Executive Director, Director of Operations, Music Director, Teaching Artists, program staff, school staff, and parents and families
- Attend professional-development sessions and planning meetings; seek opportunities specific to music education when applicable
- Seek performance opportunities in the Bay Area for the Youth Chorus
- Collaborate with Executive Director to oversee performance opportunities
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will possess:
- At least 1 year of experience teaching group choir lessons to students of different ages/abilities
- Singing instruction and piano experience are preferred
- Creative, motivated and energetic
- Ability to work with and manage a large group of students at one time
- A flexible schedule that allows for a commitment to the program for a school year
- Experience working with children from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds
- Able to work with and communicate comfortably and respectfully with students, families, and administration
- Strong organization skills, matched by a sense of humor and readiness to adapt
- Must pass live scan fingerprinting (background check) and provide negative TB tests
Educational Preferences: Experience Counts!
Bachelor’s degree (or in progress) in music education or performance
