Sirius Staffing is seeking an experienced Electrical & Controls Engineer for a direct-hire opportunity in Theodore, Alabama. This position will support a highly automated industrial manufacturing operation and is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, programming, and improving electrical, instrumentation, and process control systems throughout the facility.
The ideal candidate will bring strong hands-on experience with Allen-Bradley/Rockwell and Siemens PLC systems, industrial instrumentation, HMIs, VFDs, electrical distribution, and plant automation. This role combines day-to-day plant troubleshooting with controls programming, preventive maintenance, process improvement, and capital project support.
Responsibilities
- Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and improve industrial control systems, PLCs, instrumentation, industrial networks, and electrical power distribution equipment.
- Program, modify, troubleshoot, back up, and document PLC and HMI systems.
- Maintain, update, back up, and troubleshoot operator interface equipment.
- Troubleshoot and modify instrumentation and control loops using P&IDs and plant operating systems.
- Diagnose PLC logic, field I/O, instrumentation, electrical, and process-control issues affecting production.
- Install, configure, and troubleshoot variable frequency drives (VFDs).
- Support Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and integration between DCS, PLC, HMI, and field instrumentation.
- Work with Ethernet-based industrial control networks and common industrial communication protocols.
- Read and interpret PFDs, P&IDs, electrical drawings, equipment manuals, and technical documentation.
- Perform preventive maintenance, work orders, and troubleshooting of plant electrical and control equipment.
- Support electrical and controls portions of capital improvement projects and equipment installations.
- Identify and implement process improvements that reduce downtime, waste, and operating costs while improving reliability and production efficiency.
- Analyze process and equipment data to identify trends and recommend improvements.
- Partner with Engineering, Maintenance, Production, Operations, and Quality teams to develop and implement SOPs and work instructions.
- Ensure all work complies with applicable safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain accurate controls documentation, system backups, drawings, and program records.
- Stay current with advancements in industrial electrical, controls, and automation technologies.
Qualifications
- 7+ years of electrical, instrumentation, automation, or controls experience within an industrial manufacturing or process environment.
- Demonstrated hands-on PLC programming and troubleshooting experience.
- Experience with Allen-Bradley/Rockwell and Siemens PLC platforms.
- Experience with process automation and industrial control systems.
- Strong knowledge of industrial instrumentation, field I/O, control loops, and P&IDs.
- Experience programming and troubleshooting HMIs/operator interfaces.
- Experience with VFD installation, configuration, and troubleshooting.
- Understanding of industrial Ethernet networks and common communication protocols.
- Working knowledge of industrial electrical systems and power distribution equipment.
- Ability to independently diagnose complex electrical and controls problems.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects in a fast-paced plant environment.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
- Self-motivated with the ability to perform duties with minimal supervision.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Candidates with a relevant technical associate degree combined with significant industrial controls experience and/or certifications will also be considered.
- PLC or controls-related certifications.
- Experience with ControlLogix, CompactLogix, Studio 5000, TIA Portal, or similar platforms.
- Experience with Inductive Automation/Ignition or other industrial HMI/SCADA platforms.
- DCS experience.
- Experience within chemical processing, minerals, petrochemical, pulp and paper, steel, metals, or another continuous-process manufacturing environment.
- Capital project and controls-system implementation experience.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Work is performed onsite in an industrial manufacturing environment.
- Must be comfortable working around operating production equipment.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors and in varying ambient temperatures.
- Ability to climb ladders and work at heights.
- Ability to stand, sit, bend, and lift up to 50 pounds as required.
- Must be able to wear required PPE, including hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, safety footwear, and high-visibility equipment.
