The City of Chesapeake is seeking a detail oriented, analytical, and customer-focused Human Resources Generalist I to join our Human Resources team with a concentration in Classification and Compensation.
The Human Resources Generalist I plays a key role in supporting the City’s compensation strategy, job classification program, and workforce planning initiatives by conducting market research, analyzing compensation data, maintaining job classifications, and providing guidance to employees and managers on compensation and classification matters.
The ideal Human Resources Generalist I candidate will possess strong analytical skills, experience interpreting and applying HR policies, and the ability to effectively communicate complex compensation concepts to a variety of audiences.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct compensation and labor market research to evaluate salary competitiveness and support compensation recommendations.
- Collect, analyze, and interpret compensation, classification, and workforce data to identify trends and support decision making.
- Participate in salary surveys and prepare reports, analyses, and recommendations based on survey findings.
- Assist with job classification reviews, position audits, and classification studies.
- Research, collect, organize, and analyze data to support classification and compensation recommendations.
- Develop, review, update, and maintain job descriptions to ensure accuracy and alignment with organizational needs.
- Coordinate classification and compensation changes with HRIS staff to ensure accurate system updates and records maintenance.
- Maintain classification and compensation records, databases, reports, and tracking logs.
- Serve as a resource for employees and managers regarding classification, compensation, employee relations, and related human resources policies and procedures.
- Design, develop, and facilitate training programs related to compensation, classification, and human resources topics.
- Prepare reports, presentations, and supporting documentation for compensation and classification initiatives.
- Support special projects, workforce planning initiatives, and continuous improvement efforts within Human Resources.
- May provide leadership, training, and guidance to assigned staff as needed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of compensation analysis, salary administration, job evaluation, and classification methodologies.
- Experience conducting market research, salary surveys, and compensation benchmarking.
- Strong analytical, research, and problem solving skills.
- Ability to collect, interpret, and present complex data in a clear and meaningful manner.
- Knowledge of human resources principles, practices, and employment regulations.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and other data analysis tools.
- Experience working with Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, managers, and stakeholders.
