Job Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and dynamic Special Education Transition Teacher to support students with disabilities in their journey from school to post-secondary life. The ideal candidate will possess a comprehensive understanding of special education law, individualized education programs (IEPs), and transition planning strategies. This role involves designing tailored curricula, implementing behavior management techniques, and fostering independence among students with diverse needs, including those with autism and developmental disabilities. The Transition Teacher will collaborate closely with families, community agencies, and educational staff to facilitate successful transitions into higher education, employment, or independent living.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement personalized transition plans aligned with each student’s IEP goals, focusing on post-secondary education, employment, and independent living skills.
- Design specialized curricula that accommodate various learning styles and include components such as literacy, math (including calculus and algebra), and functional life skills.
- Utilize evidence-based behavioral therapy techniques, including applied behavior analysis and behavior management strategies for students with special needs.
- Conduct ongoing assessments of student progress through standardized testing, formative evaluations, and portfolio reviews to inform instructional adjustments.
- Provide direct instruction in communication skills, social skills, and vocational training to prepare students for real-world environments.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure compliance with educational regulations and legal requirements such as the IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act).
- Engage in curriculum development that incorporates learning technology tools to enhance engagement and accessibility.
- Offer mentoring and academic advising to students to foster motivation, self-advocacy, and goal setting.
- Maintain detailed documentation of student progress, IEP updates, and behavioral interventions in accordance with educational standards such as the Chicago Manual of Style and AP style guidelines.
- Facilitate community-based learning experiences and coordinate library services or extracurricular activities that support student development.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in special education, psychology, or a related field; a master’s degree is preferred.
- Valid teaching certification with endorsement in special education or transition services.
- Proven classroom experience working with students with disabilities in diverse settings, including private schools or educational administration roles.
- Strong knowledge of special education law, IEP development, and educational compliance standards.
- Expertise in curriculum development for learners with autism, developmental disabilities, or other special needs; experience designing specialized curriculums is highly desirable.
- Proficiency in learning technology applications and adaptive teaching methods tailored to individual learning styles.
- Demonstrated skills in behavior management for students with behavioral challenges or disabilities.
- Excellent communication skills for effective collaboration with families, colleagues, community agencies, and external partners.
- Experience tutoring or mentoring students in literacy education, math—including algebra and calculus—and creative writing is advantageous.

Pay: $65,000.00 - $75,000.00 per year
