Purpose:
Memorial Drive United Methodist Church is seeking a creative, organized Communications Specialist to join our team. We’re looking for a self-starter who thrives both independently and as part of a collaborative team. In this role you’ll assist with the day-to-day execution of MDUMC’s digital and print communications—managing the website, producing weekly emails and bulletins, creating social media content, and capturing life at the church through photos and video. You’ll work closely with the Director of Communications and partner with staff across the church to keep our voice consistent, our brand clear, and our congregation always in the know.
Responsibilities:
The Communications Specialist will support the Director of Communications in the day-to-day execution of MDUMC’s digital and print communications, including:
Brand & Strategy
- Uphold and enforce brand standards across all communications channels
- Assist in developing and refining communications strategies under the direction of the Communications Director
Content & Social Media
- Work collaboratively to create and post content across social media platforms, including use of scheduling and analytics tools
- Capture photo and video content at church events, Sunday morning services, and ministry activities
- Design graphics and visual assets for print and digital use
- Write and edit copy across a range of tones—from casual social media posts to formal congregation-wide communications
- Help grow and maintain engagement across MDUMC’s digital platforms
- Contribute to creative planning for new sermon series, worship experience additions, story-sharing opportunities, and video projects
- Assist with media campaign development and digital storytelling initiatives
Email & Print
- Update and distribute the weekly email newsletter to the congregation
- Design, publish, and print weekly bulletins
- Manage and fulfill communications requests from ministry leaders, including print/digital needs and website updates
- Ensure all written communications are accurate, on-brand, and error-free
Website
- Maintain and update MDUMC’s website (built on Squarespace) with current events, news, and content
- Monitor and update pages to ensure accuracy and a positive user experience
Events & Coordination
- Assist in coordinating, communicating, and executing large church events
- Support follow-up communication and next steps for event attendees
General Expectations
MDUMC staff are active participants in the life of the church. You’ll be expected to:
- Attend and engage in Staff Chapel, Worship Team, Staff Lunch, and All-Staff gatherings
- Participate in the worship and community life of the church
- Maintain healthy professional and spiritual boundaries
- Be flexible for occasional evening and weekend responsibilities tied to ministry events
Qualifications
Required:
- Holds a bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, or a related field—or has equivalent experience
- Is proficient with Canva
- Is proficient with Microsoft 365
- Has experience with Adobe Creative Suite
- Has intermediate to advanced graphic design skills, with the ability to produce polished, on-brand assets for both print and digital use
- Has experience with Squarespace or a comparable website platform
- Has strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to adapt tone and voice for different audiences
- Brings strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple deadlines
- Is a self-starter with the ability to work independently and take initiative
- Has a keen attention to detail and commitment to brand accuracy and consistency
- Is open to growing new skills on the job
Desired:
- Has experience in church, nonprofit, or ministry communications
- Has photography experience, including an eye for composition and the ability to capture event and worship moments
- Has basic videography and video editing experience
