Association to Benefit Children, a non-profit dedicated to ensuring that every child has a joyful, healthy, and safe life through compassionate and innovative programs since 1986, is hiring a Group Leader for its Youth Services programs serving school-aged children in grades K-5 grade.
During the school year, ABC offers after school programing to youth who are among New York City’s most vulnerable children and families. Based in East Harlem, the program offers many fun activities for kids to be creative and build a sense of community with other youth. Group leaders do more than oversee their groups; they are an integral part in the participants' time with ABC. Through mentorship and social-emotional support, group leaders support youth even more by making them feel heard, noticed and cared for. Join ABC’s after school program as a group leader that acts as a mentor and a person who supports youth with compassion and care.
This is a part-time position with hours from 2:30-6pm.
Responsibilities include:
- Planning and facilitating a number of activities that may include social emotional learning, academic enrichment, and career and college exploration.
- Providing mentorship, social-emotional support and guidance to youth in after school.
- Aiding children during enrichment activities, including dance and cooking.
- Providing homework help to youth participants in most school subjects.
- Monitoring children and taking daily attendance.
- Communicating effectively with all staff and parents and conducting oneself professionally to represent ABC.
- Attending all necessary program meetings and trainings.
- Performing other related duties as assigned.
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or some college required.
- 2-5 years of experience working with at risk youth.
- Applicant will need to pass an extensive health and background check, including DOE fingerprinting.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- A willingness and love of interacting with children.
- A confidence that echoes in high stress or high-energy situations.
- Strong organizational and planning skills.
- Flexibility and willingness to adapt to changes.
