JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Sexton
Employment Classification: Part-time
Accountability: This position is accountable to the Trustees & Staff Pastor Parish Relation Committee.
Position Summary
The Sexton is responsible for the care of the building and its contents. The Sexton fulfills a vital role at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church of Vanderveer Park “SPUMC” by maintaining clean and welcoming facilities, interacting courteously with congregation members and visitors, and securing the building.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities
· The total church facility and the church parsonage on Clarendon Road will always be maintained clean and orderly.
· Clean windows and sills, sweep vacuum carpeted areas, dust, mop, wax floors, and mow lawn(s) for both church and parsonage.
· Clean restrooms and restock paper supplies.
· Clean before and after church activities as needed, such as showers, weddings, and funerals. Set up tables and rooms for these activities and other church-related activities as requested.
· Make minor repairs to facility and equipment when appropriate and report other repair needs to the Trustee Chair or Liaison.
· Where possible, replace light bulbs inside and outside.
· Obtain from Trustees all cleaning supplies, i.e. paper towels, light bulbs, etc.
· Shovel snow and keep sidewalks clear of ice for church and parsonage (arrange for salt/sand for the ice.)
· Empty all trash cans and wastebaskets and place trash and recyclables outside for scheduled garbage pick-up for both church and parsonage.
· Set up rooms for Sunday.
· Clean bulletins from the pews, straighten hymnals and remove any extra chairs used in worship.
· Provide regular weekly cleaning of the meditation area, outside trash storage area, and lawn/sidewalk areas adjacent to both entranceways.
· Shampoo carpets as needed.
· Other tasks as assigned.
Job Evaluation and Provisions
· Upon employment, the first three months are considered probationary.
· The Staff Parish Relations Committee will review salary and performance annually.
· The Sexton shall provide the proper information to abide by the Church’s Safe Sanctuary Policy and adhere to the Church’s Handbook Policies.
Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities
· Alignment with and commitment to the mission, vision, and values of SPUMC.
· High School diploma or equivalent required.
· At least one year of related janitorial or custodial experience.
· Able to lift 50 pounds and climb stairs and ladders as required.
· Able to perform regularly moving tables, stacking chairs, moving and setting up, and occasionally moving furniture.
· Able to use cleaning and maintenance materials and equipment safely.
· Able to work cooperatively and independently as a member of a team; able to work tactfully under pressure.
· Able to interact courteously and respectfully with diverse congregation members, visitors, and volunteers.
· Able to communicate verbally and in writing in English; comprehend and respond to written instructions.
· Able to be flexible with work schedule depending on the season and events on the Church’s calendar.
Pay: $18.95 - $20.00 per hour
