Full job description
Piedmont Asphalt, LLC. is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Quality Control (QC) Technician to join our team. The QC Technician will be responsible for performing routine testing of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) to ensure compliance with job or agency specifications. This includes assisting with adjustments to plant settings, collecting samples, and supporting mix design development. The QC Technician plays a critical role in maintaining the quality of materials used in paving projects and ensuring adherence to industry standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform daily QC testing on Hot Mix Asphalt as required by governing agencies and at the discretion of the QC Manager.
- Collect samples of materials and asphalt for testing and analysis.
- Record and report data collected from tests to ensure accurate tracking and documentation.
- Assist in the development and modification of mix designs based on test results and plant production needs.
- Conduct stockpile analysis on incoming aggregates and Recycled Asphalt Pavement (RAP) stockpiles as needed to maintain quality control.
- Monitor and assist in adjustments to plant settings to ensure proper mix consistency and compliance with specifications.
- Ensure all work is in compliance with safety standards, quality control protocols, and regulatory requirements.
- Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors to report findings and assist with decision-making.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent required. Please provide proof.
- Proof of college education if any.
- At least six months of experience in asphalt quality control preferred.
- NCDOT & VDOT Asphalt Level I & II training is a plus, but not required.
- Basic knowledge of materials, mixing processes, and asphalt quality control.
- Basic mathematical skills, including the ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, calculate percentages, and work with weights.
- Ability to read and comprehend technical manuals, use measuring devices, and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Must have good penmanship, record-keeping, and basic computer skills.
Minimum Skills and Requirements:
- Ability to perform strenuous work and handle physical tasks.
- Ability to work nights and weekends as needed.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license for the territory of operation.
- Ability to communicate effectively over the company radio and with team members.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team to ensure job and project requirements are met.
- The job involves standing, walking, and performing tasks that may require lifting up to 50 pounds.
Certifications
- This lab technician job requires certifications, and they must be renewed every five years.
- The company pays for all certifications.
- We test asphalt at four locations for Piedmont Asphalt. We work for two different States; VDOT-Virginia and NCDOT- North Carolina.
- There is a VDOT Level I and VDOT Level II test and a proficiency for both. These must be passed within six months of being hired or when the class is offered.
- There is a NCDOT Intro to Asphalt, NCDOT Level I and NCDOT Level II test and proficiency is required once a year. You must pass Intro to Asphalt 1st, take 10 days of training, and then the NCDOT Level I test within six months of being hired or when the class is offered.
- NCDOT Level II can take some time and isn’t required immediately, usually technicians can pass this after working here for a while.
- VDOT gives two chances on each test and if you fail both times then you will be terminated. VDOT requires a 70 to pass and both are open book, but the proficiency is closed book.
- NCDOT gives two chances on each test but you have to make at least a 70 to qualify for a retake. NCDOT requires an 80 to pass. If you fail both times then you will be terminated. NCDOT is open book, but the proficiency is closed book.
- You have to pass Level I in both states before you can take Level II and Intro to Asphalt must be passed before you can take Level I for NCDOT.
- This job requires specific certifications and you are "no good" without them, which means they are mandatory, non-negotiable requirements for safety, legal, or industry compliance.

- Overtime required after the necessary training is met. 50 to 60 hours.
- All new technicians will get laid off for at least 6 to 8 weeks. Example: This could be at the end of December until sometime in February.

Company Trucks
- Lab Technicians get company trucks to take home after they become certified NCDOT & VDOT Asphalt Level I & II and a person can usually achieve this after working in asphalt for 2 or 3 years. They must also maintain a good driving record.
- Company trucks are distributed once a year. Roanoke decides when trucks can be purchased. Trucks could be new or used.
- Truck privileges can be revoked.
Drug Testing:
- Candidates must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test as well as random tests if selected during employment.

- Must fill out the Piedmont Asphalt application.
