Library Director

About the Position
The City of Wendell is seeking a motivated, professional, and community-minded Library Director to lead the Wendell Public Library. This is a hands-on leadership position in a small public library where the Director works directly with patrons, supervises staff, manages library operations, develops programs and services, and works closely with the Library Board and City.
The ideal candidate will be friendly, organized, dependable, adaptable, and passionate about providing excellent library services to patrons of all ages.
The Library Director works under the administrative direction of the Wendell Library Board of Directors.
Key Responsibilities
Library Operations
· Work a minimum of 30 hours per week and maintain regular library operating hours.
· Oversee the daily operation of the library.
· Open and close the library as needed.
· Provide excellent customer service and assistance to patrons of all ages.
· Operate the library's automated circulation system.
· Check materials in and out, process holds, register patrons, collect fees, and maintain accurate patron records.
· Answer telephone calls, emails, and general inquiries.
· Assist patrons with computers, printers, copiers, and other library equipment.
· Process overdue materials and maintain related records.
· Handle incoming and outgoing mail.
· Process Interlibrary Loan requests.
· Maintain accurate records of circulation, activities, finances, and other required information.
Reference & Reader's Advisory
· Provide reference and research assistance.
· Help patrons locate and select appropriate library materials.
· Provide reader's advisory services based on patron interests and needs.
· Assist patrons with technology and information resources.
Collection Development
· Participate in selecting and evaluating library materials.
· Consider patron requests, community needs, reviews, and current trends when developing the collection.
· Catalog and process new materials.
· Shelve, organize, and maintain library collections.
· Weed and withdraw outdated or unused materials.
· Repair library materials as needed.
· Process and maintain periodicals and rotating collections.
· Recommend improvements to the library collection and services.
Programming & Community Outreach
· Plan, organize, schedule, and conduct programs and events for children, teens, adults, families, and the community.
· Develop programs that meet the needs and interests of the Wendell community.
· Work with volunteers and community organizations.
· Promote library services and programs throughout the community.
· Solicit donations and develop community partnerships.
· Represent the library at community meetings and professional events.
· Work with the Friends of the Library organization.
· Seek grant opportunities and prepare grant applications to support library programs, services, equipment, and improvements.
Staff Supervision & Personnel
· Supervise and support library staff and volunteers.
· Create a positive, professional, and cooperative team environment.
· Train staff in library procedures, technology, customer service, and administrative duties.
· Develop staff schedules and assign work responsibilities.
· Conduct employee evaluations and provide feedback.
· Participate in hiring, disciplinary, and other personnel actions as authorized.
· Keep the Library Board informed of staffing changes and personnel matters.
· Ensure employees understand and follow library policies and procedures.
Library Board & City Relations
· Work cooperatively and professionally with the Library Board, City officials, employees, volunteers, patrons, and community members.
· Provide staff support to the Library Board.
· Assist with preparing for Board meetings, reports, records, and other necessary materials.
· Implement policies and directives adopted by the Library Board.
· Keep the Library Board informed regarding library operations, staffing, programs, finances, building needs, and other significant issues.
· Maintain positive working relationships with City officials and community partners.
· Address patron concerns and complaints professionally and appropriately.
· Maintain confidentiality of patron and library information.
Budget & Administration
· Manage library expenditures within the approved budget.
· Monitor departmental spending and identify operational needs.
· Prepare specifications and recommendations for equipment, furniture, supplies, and other purchases.
· Maintain an inventory of library equipment, furniture, and supplies.
· Identify opportunities to improve library services while working within available resources.
· Assist with grant administration and reporting.

Education & Experience
A degree in Library Science, Library and Information Science, Public Administration, or a related field is preferred.
Previous library experience, supervisory experience, customer service experience, or experience working in a community-based organization is highly desirable.
Relevant education and experience may be considered in combination.
Physical Requirements
This position requires the ability to:
· Work in an office and public-service environment with frequent interruptions and background noise.
· Sit, stand, walk, bend, kneel, reach, and move throughout the library.
· Lift and move library materials and supplies weighing up to 25 pounds.
· Shelve materials on shelving ranging approximately from 1 to 7 feet from the floor.
· Operate a computer, keyboard, telephone, copier, printer, and other office/library equipment.
· Read printed materials and information displayed on computer screens.
· Communicate effectively in person, by telephone, and in writing.
· Work flexible hours as necessary to support library operations, programs, meetings, and community events.
· Travel occasionally to attend meetings, conferences, workshops, or other professional activities.

Schedule
Minimum 30 hours per week.
